St Mary Church, Burham M.I.s & other information with Index of names at end Back to Churchyards listed Pre 1914 Monumental Inscriptions of St Mary Church, Burham - recorded by D. E. Williams 2011 ST. MARY, BURHAM, FROM THE SOUTH WEST Introduction St. Mary's Church was declared redundant many years ago, and is now in the care of the Churches Conservation Trust. Following the migration of the village to higher ground on the main Rochester – Maidstone road, a replacement church was built close to this road in the 1880's; ironically, the new church was demolished about 30 years ago when the tower was found to be unsafe and in danger of collapsing! The 15th century tower of St. Mary's looks as if it will be standing in a thousand years time. In the middle ages the church was considerably larger, once having north and south aisles. Like the church at Snodland, on the opposite bank of the River Medway, St. Mary's stands very close to the route to a former ford, (later replaced by a ferry) across the Medway, this was a link in the pre-historic track along the foot of the North Downs, later named the Pilgrims' Way. The churchyard is still in use for burials D. E. Williams Boxing Day, 2011 CHURCHYARD 1.
