The Lower Lines, Brompton – Defence and Experimentation

The threat of French Invasion in the early nineteenth century led to the expansion of the Great Lines to improve the defence of Chatham Dockyard. Never used militarily, these Lower Lines became a focus for training and experimentation for the Royal Engineers at Brompton. Later the site would form the headquarters for the Nore Command during the Second World War. This talk will explore the history and archaeology of the site as uncovered during work between 2007 and 2009.
