Monumental Inscriptions of St Helen's Church, Cliffe

Monumental Inscriptions of St Helen's Church, Cliffe recorded by D. E. Williams 2011.

IntroductionSt. Helen's is a major church of the 13th and 14th centuries. The churchyard covers, more or less, two acres. The interior of this large church is rather disappointing as far as monuments are concerned, many of the inscriptions recorded by Thorp in the 18th century are no longer visible. The lack of significant monuments inside the church is probably due to the fact that the Hoo Peninsular was not popular with the "Gentry". The area was seen as very unhealthy because of the proximity of the marshes. Marsh ague or malaria was a hazard in the area until drainage was improved from the mid 19th century. The two largest monuments in the the churchyard belonged to families who lived, respectively, on Lodge Hill, on high ground to the south, and Milton near Gravesend, (Smith and Harvey).

I have not recorded inscriptions from the more recent graves, post 1929, or from the modern extension to the west.

I have divided the churchyard into five portions. SECTION A is south of the church and south of the footpath to Church Street. SECTION B is south and east of the church as far north as the north east corner of the north transept.

SECTION C is north of Section B. SECTION D is north of the main body of the church, from the north east corner of the north transept to the north west corner of the north aisle. SECTION E is the major part of the churchyard west of the church. It is divided into nine unequal areas. The east – west (or horizontal) lines run parallel with the boundary walls, from the southern edge of the south aisle, and from the northern edge of the north aisle. The south – north (or vertical) lines run north from the large tree by the Rumble headstones, and the westernmost, parallel with the western edge of the large Smith Family tomb.

On page 229 of Phippen's, Descriptive Sketches of Rochester, Chatham and Their Vicinities,1862, the author notes "on the south side of the churchyard is a large monument belonging to the SOMNER family, in which FRANCES SOMNER, who died in 1648, aged 22 was buried". The chest tomb is the only large monument on the south side, apart from the STEEL monument of the early 19th century. It is possible that this is the SOMNER tomb, so I am including these verses which Phippen recorded in 1862.

"Passengers weepe Here lies a wife who caused none to doe soe in her life One that was all good you'd finde in the whole piece of woman kind so modest that shee shond the light and died not, bot went out of sight She thought that Mother goes o'th score to death whose childs deceas'd before Heaven was her portion and she's none to claim't being past her twentie one – Now passenger y'ave leave to walke she and her tomb after to talke"

[    ]9 AGED 57 ? YEARS

John Browne is probably buried in the same grave as his daughter, though it is not clear to whom the side panel refers to.
The rest of the tomb, apart from the top ledger is completely eroded.
John Browne's will is dated 7th ? June 1679. He is a Gentleman of Cliffe.
To wife Rebecca, "she hath a Jointure in Rickles? Marsh"; £10 per annum from Rickles Marsh, while she remains a widow. To daughter Rebecca, £1,000 at 21 years, if she dies before 21, £1,000 shared between his three sons, John, Joseph and Joshua. If she marries before 21 and has a son or daughter or sons and daughters, her children to have the £1,000. If only one child, only £500 to that child. To son Joseph land he bought of Mr Tambling and Gregory Steward?, except ½ acre of woodland at lower end of Strate Wood. But Joseph to have piece of woodland belonging to Horshoe House. To son Joshua property bought from William Browne, Richard Browne and Thomas Browne. Wife Rebecca to bring up his three youngest children, and she to have £60 per annum from Executors as long as she remains a widow. If she remarries, Executors to bring up children. To brother Richard Browne £20, and he forgives him all he owes. To son Joshua, land at the lower end of Church Street. A house in Church Street given for a school (see Plaque in Interior). To son John Browne, Rickles Marsh and house in Church Street, formerly called "Bull House", with stables and yard. One ---? and yard in Redam Mead, and one other house John Haye lives in. All his houses and land in Southfleet, provided he keeps property given to Joseph and Joshua in good repair, and to give property to them when they are of age. If they died before 21 without heirs, their shares divided equally among surviving brothers. To sister Starkey, £5. Brother Richard Browne and brother Richard Starkey to be Overseers.
Witnesses: Richard Slater, Augustine Cesar and John Cowland

Although one would expect David Heath to be buried under this monument, he does not appear in the Burial Register? The Heaths and the Browns were also united by the marriage of Joshua Brown and Mary Heath at Cliffe in September 1695.
David Heath's will is dated 24th April 1728 and he describes himself as a Gentleman.
To grandson Heath Calant, who is to be Sole Executor, property and land called East Borough Farm, Frindsbury. In Cliffe, hop ground and oast house, "by me, newly built"; also waste land, "used to lay dung on". All other real estate in Kent to Heath Calant, including house and sheepwick and marshland called Buckland Marsh in parish of Frindsbury, leased from Dean and Chapter of Rochester. To sister Mary Brown £20. To Heath Calant residue of goods, etc. except lease of farm and lands held from George Faunce, Esq.. Nephew David Brown to have latter, except 3 acres of hop ground belonging to said farm, upon condition that David Brown lives in the dwelling house on the farm. Before he enters the house he must give security to Heath Calant for the latter to hold the 3 acres of hop ground and Parsonage of Cliffe, if Heath Calant wants it. If David Brown refuses to live in house or occupies it before security is given to Heath Calant,or does not let Heath Calant have the 3 acres of hops and Parsonage, contrary to will, then lease farm and land goes to Heath Calant for term of the lease. If David Brown does agree to terms, he shall have first refusal of all live and dead stock of the farm, as Heath Calant can spare. These are to be valued, and David Brown is to pay Heath Calant securities for value of stock.
Witnesses: William Elliott, William Carsley and Henry Barrell
   David
Heath's will had not been administered by Heath Callant when the latter died in 1751. His widow was granted Administration.

(*Mary Steel is buried in Section E, see Headstone Inscription)

Charles Steel was a Farmer of Court Sole Farm. His will is dated 16th June 1826.
He desires to be buried in his vault in the churchyard of Cliffe, "where the remains of part of my family are already deposited and that a suitable inscription be made on the Tomb over the said vault to my memory". Later in his will he leaves £5 per annum from Court Sole, to the Rector and Churchwardens of Cliffe, payable on the 29th September, each year, for "keeping in repair the vault belonging to and lately made by me in the churchyard of the said Parish of Cliffe and also the Tomb over the said vault, and also in or towards the painting, repairing and keeping in repair the iron railings thereto". It shall be lawful for the Rector and Churchwardens to distrain the farm for the payment.
It cannot escape the notice of all who enter the churchyard, that this obligation, if taken on by the Rector and Churchwardens, has for some time past, been sadly neglected, although £5 per annum would hardly suffice today!
The will goes on :
By an indenture of 28th February 1822, made between Charles Steel, of the 1st part, Sarah Steel, his wife, of the 2nd part and James Pelling Hatch and Nathaniel Boorman of the 3rd part, an agreement between Charles Steel his heirs and executors with James Pelling Hatch, Nathaniel Boorman that Charles Steel would pay to his wife, Sarah during her life an annuity of £60 per annum out of his estate by the executors and trustees of his will.
To John Sloman of Maidstone, Timber Merchant, and John Comport of Cooling, Gentleman and James Steel of Cliffe, Yeoman, Court Sole Farm and several pieces of land belonging to it, 63 acres, in his own occupation to supply the annuity of £60 per annum. His two cottages, divided into 3 properties and gardens in Cliffe, also his shares of marshland of 40 acres in the parishes of Breznett ?, Snargate, Warehorne and Brookland in Romney Marsh in the occupation of his nephew, Charles Steel, also arable land in Romney Marsh, near Brenzett and Snargate, lately purchased by him from the assigns? Of his late brother Samuel Steel, of 4 acres 1rood and 23 perches, occupied by nephew Charles Steel, and all his other freehold properties, upon trust. The latter to pay his daughter Mary , now wife of John Sloman, the annual rents and profits during her life for her own sole use. After her death, John Sloman can take the same benefits for his life. After they are both dead, upon trust to pay Charles Steel Sloman, eldest son of John and Mary Sloman same income for life. After his death, upon trust for all the children of Charles Steel Sloman at 21 years of age. If Charles Steel Sloman has no surviving children, property in Cliffe and Romney Marsh, upon trust to pay John Sloman, son of John and Mary Sloman annual rents etc. at 21 years of age, for life. After the death of John Sloman, to his children, equally, if there are no surviving children or he has no living siblings, then to nephew Charles Steel son of brother James Steel. He forgives nephew George Steel of Stoke, Yeoman money which he owes.
To nephews James and Charles Steel, £50 each. To John Gibbs of Strood, Gentleman (his Solicitor), and to John Sloman , John Comport and James Waters of Rochester, Yeoman, 19 guineas each. To any men and maid servants at time of his death, £10 each, over and above any wages due. To grand daughter Elizabeth Hatch, only child of daughter Rebecca, late wife of William Hatch of Leybourne, Farmer, £1,500 from funds and securities at 21 years of age. If she dies under 21 leaving issue, then to child or children equally at 21. If she leaves no children, then the £1,500, plus stocks and securities to the value of £1,500 to trustees to pay grandchildren, James and Sarah Hatch, son and daughter of daughter Sarah, late wife of James Pelling Hatch of Strood, Tailor at 21. If they died under 21, leaving issue, then ½ of the above money and stocks etc. equally to their children at 21.If no children, upon trust to pay daughter Mary Sloman interest etc. of the £1,500 for life, after her death, upon trust to pay John Sloman interest for life. Stocks to be transferred to all of Mary Sloman's children, equally at 21, if they died before 21, then to all his nephews and nieces, equally. Trustees can take money from rents etc. to pay for education, etc. of the beneficiaries under the will. There follows complicated details concerning the executors.

"By an explosion which occurred yesterday at the explosives factory of Messrs. Curtis and Harvey at Cliffe, about eight miles (sic) from Chatham, three men were killed and others were injured. The names of the killed are Ernest Law, Charles Hawkins and George Walkingshaw. A workman named Joseph Wordly* was removed to St. Bartholomew's Hospital suffering from extensive burns. The nitro-glycerine mixing-house was completely destroyed.
Hawkins and Law were working in the house at the time, while Walkingshaw was carrying materials to the hut. All three men were blown to atoms. About a dozen employes who were engaged in different parts of the works were injured, several having limbs broken. They were attended to at the factory surgery.
Much damage was done to the company's offices and other buildings. The timekeeper's house was well-nigh wrecked. The windows of many houses in the village, situated a mile distant, were smashed. The cause of the explosion is at present unknown. Law and Hawkins were married men and Walkingshaw was single"

The Kent Messenger, November 6th 1926
CHATHAM MAN DROWNED OFF RAMSGATE
Swanscombe Engineer's Story of Wreck

"The final chapter in last Thursday's drama of the sea took place at Lydd Town Hall on Thursday, when Dr. A. MacMillan held an inquest on a body found washed ashore at Dungeness on Monday. It was that of "Thomas Woolley" of Chatham, second engineer on the oil tanker Roam which sank in heavy seas ten or twelve miles off Ramsgate. Four of the crew of five were saved by the Ramsgate steam trawler Harvest Moon.
The story of the wreck was told to the Coroner by Charles Nelson Roymund Gear, chief engineer, of 30 Broomfield Road, Swanscombe, who said the Roam left Margate on October 27th for Bruges with a cargo of tar, and a crew consisting of the captain, mate, first and second engineers, and cook. They encountered bad weather near the Sandette Lightship and commenced shipping heavy seas. At 11.30 p.m. The captain decided to turn for shelter and headed for the North Foreland. Upon discovering that the tanker was floundering, everything was made secure, distress signals were sent up and flames burnt. The engines were stopped and the ship's lifeboat having been washed away, the crew went on deck and donned their lifebelts, and Woolley was in his company during this time. "About five minutes after we had put on the lifebelts" said the witness, "the ship gave a lurch and the mate, cook and deceased dived overboard, followed by the captain and myself, and that was the last I saw of Woolley. A large cargo steamer about a quarter of a mile away threw a lifebuoy to us. The Harvest Moon picked us up, but Woolley was missing, and we cruised about for half an hour without finding any trace of him. We were then taken ashore at Ramsgate".
William Coleman, chief officer at Dungeness Admiralty Station, who discovered the body, said the cork lifebelt was securely fastened.
Dr. J. A. Proctor, The Paddocks, Lydd, stated he was of the opinion that death was caused by drowning.
   The inquest was adjourned.

This very eroded stone could well be the headstone of John Hoadly, died 1719. The style of stone fits the period. Unfortunately, I have not found an obvious fit for the surviving inscription, obviously a woman, perhaps his mother?
She may have remarried elsewhere, so may be in the Burial Register under a different name. In case it is John Hoadly's stone, I am including his will, which is dated 4th September 1719.
John Hoadly of Cliffe, Farmer, having a stone.(Cause of death ?)

"In the Midst of Life we are in Death"

"The Times", July 9th 1901
"A fire occurred early yesterday morning through a paraffin lamp bursting at a cottage occupied by a farm labourer named Kenknight, at Cliffe-at-Hoo, near Rochester. The flames quickly spread to an adjoining cottage, and the two houses, which were composed mostly of tarred wood, were entirely destroyed. Kenknight escaped from the burning building, as did Mrs Kenknight, an invalid, but she was terribly burned. Kenknight afterwards returned to the cottage to rescue his two children, but was overpowered by the smoke and heat, and both he and the children, two daughters, aged four and eight, perished. Their bodies were afterwards recovered in a terribly charred condition among debris in the cellar"

From the "Kent Messenger" 13th July 1901
"Yesterday, (Thursday) Mrs Kenknight succumbed to her injuries in St. Bartholomew's Hospital"
"The five children who escaped , and who are now orphans, the oldest being 17 and the youngest two, are left entirely destitute. A subscription list has been opened on their behalf, and a committee publicly elected to act as trustees. Subscriptions may be sent to either the Re. H. Boyd, Rector of Cliffe; Mr John Robertson, Chairman of the Parish Council; or Councillor F. Wright"

Frederick
Kenknight was killed by an explosion of Gun Cotton at the Curtis and Harvey Explosives Factory on Cliffe Marshes. William Moon (Monument in same Section) was fatally burnt in the explosion, which occurred in the early hours of the 4th February. "The Times", 20th February 1904, reported that the explosion was probably caused by friction against over heated gun cotton, which Kenknight and Moon had moved to a new hut from the drying room. The stove in the drying room had probably not cooled sufficiently, so the Gun Cotton was probably too warm. The Explosives Inspector was of the opinion that no blame could be attached to either man. Inquest verdicts of "Accidental Death" were returned.
