95. HARRISON - Benjamin Harrison was presented to the Vicarage of St. Clement, Sandwich the 19th of Novr. and inducted the 24th of the same month 1660 and resigned it in 1666; though he appears to have been in possession of this vicarage at an earlier date, in 1649 as he was sequestered August 1st 1650 "for refusing to observe the parliament fasts and to read their declarations". He was much harassed by different sets of sequestrators and ‘one Sunday morning, whilst he was in his prayer before sermon in the pulpit, an officer came in with one or two files of musqueteers, and commanded him to come down; but he not regarding their words but continuing the holy office he was about unconcerned, the officer gave the necessary words of command to make ready, then to present; but perceiving him still unmoved he did not think fit to give the last word of command (fire); but instead of that commanded his soldiers to go and drag him out of the pulpit, which was accordingly done; and they carried him away in great triumph to the main guard, and after that to prison, where he remained some time. But what is most remarkable is that, that very Sunday in the afternoon on which they pulled him out of the pulpit, knocking his head against the steps of the pulpit and desk, by a strange and unaccountable accident, only by providence by what ever appeared, the court of guard was blown up with gunpowder, and the man that first laid his hands upon him killed dead by taking away his belly at once, and a great many others of them mortally wounded. Nor must it be forgotten that, the same day or the day following, one Capt. WILSLON came to the church and pulled down the commandments. In 1653 Mr HARRISON came to South Taunton in Devon, and returned to St. Clements in 1660; where he continued about six years, and then was removed to another living in the West’.
