Aims of the Maritime Kent Special Interest Group

The Maritime Kent Special Interest Group has been set up as a focal point to support and to disseminate research and information relating to Kent’s rich maritime heritage.

As well as archaeological exploration and research we aim to cover all areas of interest relating to maritime history including trade, industry, migration and defence and also the economic and social history of Kent’s coastal towns and communities.

Maritime Kent Through the Ages was published by Boydell in November 2021 with considerable support from KAS and there have also been two conferences on Kent’s maritime history which were linked to the book. In the afterword Dr Margarette Lincoln states `just as Kent’s coastline is constantly changing the history of Kent proves to be varied, fluid and of enormous interest. This volume is a milestone and points the way to future studies’.

We want to support these future studies and so bring more of the county’s fascinating maritime history to the attention of a wider audience. We’d be interested to hear from anyone with ideas and suggestions about what the group can do to support and promote this history and to raise awareness for people in Kent and beyond.
