Vacancy for Editor of Archaeologia Cantiana

An exciting and interesting role of the editorship of the Society's journal Archaeologia Cantiana.

Background

Archaeologia Cantiana is the principal publication of the Kent Archaeological Society. The Journal has been published since 1858 in 143 volumes comprising over 7,000 articles. The Journal is a significant and important contribution to the better understanding of the history and archaeology of the County of Kent. The Journal is distributed to the members of the Society, the British Library, and academic institutions. It is one of the longest established and most highly regarded local history journals produced today.

Role

The Editor will produce, an annual peer reviewed, printed volume of Archaeologia Cantiana. In addition to the printed volume a volume in html will be made available for website publication together with side car downloadable pdf files of the individual articles. The appointed editor will also be expected to explore ways of developing the impact of the journal, by exploring options for its academic impact, and partnerships whereby this might be delivered in terms of publishing companies.

Title

Archaeologia Cantiana Editor or “Editor” for short.

Reporting

On matters of timescales and cost the reporting will be to the General Manager. On matters relating to content, layouts etc. reporting will be to the Chair of the Publications Committee. The Editor is part of the Management Group of the Society.

Location

A home-based role, and occasional visits to the Society Library, Maidstone Museum, St Faiths Street, Maidstone, Kent ME14 1LH.

Editor Specification

• Peer review processes

• Compliance with the Charity’s charitable objects

• Physical print production and distribution process

• Experience of Microsoft 365, particularly a high level of competence with Word, is essential.

• SharePoint would be helpful, however training will be provided.

• Print production software, e.g. Adobe InDesign

• A comfortable understanding of the internet and web-based technologies, including html

• Only Society IT infrastructure (Hardware and Software) will be used in this role

• Attendance at Management Team meetings either in person or online

• Must comply with the Society’s writing guides.

Personal specification

• A good knowledge of the history and archaeology of the Ancient County of Kent

• A natural networker who can manage authors and other content providers

• A team player, with an individualist streak so they can stamp their authority on the role

• Some understanding of academic impact assessment, and in particular the REF (Research Excellence Framework) process.

Renumeration

This is a part time role that will attract a full-time equivalent salary of £32,000 per annum.

Salary is paid monthly on the 25th day or date nearest to the 25th if the 25th falls on a weekend or bank holiday. Autoenrollment in a Stakeholder pension after 90 days. Reasonable travel and out of pocket expenses will be covered. There will be a 1st volume probationary period.

Information Technology

The Society will provide the Editor with a high-quality work setup including a laptop, dual monitors, printer/scanner, tablet, and where possible connectivity. Telephony (Amazon Connect or Microsoft Teams Phone) will be implemented at some stage in the future.
