Monumental Inscriptions of Benenden Church and Churchyard, from a book, published in 1889 by Rev Francis Haslewood, Rector of St Matthew's Church, Ipswich. Kindly typed up for the website by Pat Tritton.
In the ChurchChancel.
1. (On the glass of east window). In honour of God and in affectionate remembrance of his father and mother, John and Isabel HARDY. G.H. mdccclxii.
2. (On the reredos). To the glory of God, and in thankful remembrance of fifty years of happiness granted to our parents, 1838-1888.
3. (Brass on chancel arch, north side, close to pulpit). In memory of Richard FARLEY, who having been parish clerk and sexton of Benenden for 27 years, died suddenly on the 12th February 1874, aged 57. The Vicar of the parish, William John EDGE, hereby records his grief for the loss of one whom he greatly esteemed, and who for nearly sixteen years was his constant and faithful assistant in all the services of this house of God.
North Chancel.
4. (Marble monument against north window). Sacred to the memory of Thomas Hallett HODGES of Hempstead Place in this parish, Esq. High Sheriff of the county of Kent in the year 1786, who died June 23, 1801 aged 47 years. And of Dorothy Hodges his wife (youngest daughter of William CARTWRIGHT of Marnham in the county of Nottingham, Esq) who died January 21, 1800 aged 48. They left five surviving children, Thomas Law Hodges of Hempstead Place, Esq; Henry Hodges, B.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge; Edmund Hodges; Ann Elizabeth Hodges; and Julia Frances Hodges. Their second son, John Hodges, died on board the Warley East Indiaman, on his passage from Madras to China, October 9, 1793 aged 16 years. And their fourth son, Francis Willoughby Hodges, third Lieutenant of His Majesty’s frigate Diana, died of the yellow fever on board of that ship in the West Indies, July 15, 1800 aged 17 years. Three of their children died in their infancy, and are buried in the same vault with their father and mother, viz: George Hodges, who died March 25, 1784 aged 14 days; Charles Hodges who died April 7, 1786 aged 1 month and 21 days; Caroline Dorothy Hodges who died October 26, 1791 aged 1 month and 6 days.
5. (White marble tablet on black ground). Sacred to the memory of Rebecca, wife of Thomas Law HODGES, Esq. of Hemsted in this parish, only child of Sir Roger TWISDEN, Bart, of Bradbourne Park in East Malling, who died a short time before her birth. She was the last survivor of that ancient family, born at Bradbourne January 5th 1780, married February 16th 1802, died at Hemsted February 2nd, 1843. Her affectionate duty to widowed mother, her love for her husband and children, and her active sympathy with the sufferings of the afflicted and the needy, were sanctified by an unfailing trust in the merits of her Saviour, and the deepest resignation to the divine will. (Arms below: Or, 3 crescents sa. on a canton of the second a ducal crown of the first. Motto: Praevisa mala periunt).
6. (White marble tablet on black ground). Sacred to the memory of Thomas Law HODGES, Esq. of Hemsted, deputy lieutenant of the county of Kent, Justice of the Peace for the counties of Kent & Sussex, chairman of the quarter sessions for many years and major in the West Kent Militia. He represented the county and subsequently to the passing the reform bill the western division in five parliaments. He married in 1802 Rebecca, only child of Sir Roger TWISDEN, Bart, and had issue Thomas Twisden Hodges, Esq. who married first, Mary Ann Floretta CHANDLESS and secondly Rosa WILSON, widow of General Sir W. NOTT, K.C.B. Anne Rebecca, wife of Cook Tylden PATTENSON, Esq; Frances Dorothy, wife of the Honourable Robert FORBES; Caroline Cordelia Hodges; Julia Elizabeth, wife of the Revd. W.M. Smith MARRIOTT; Katharine, wife of William PEARETH, Esq; Charlotte Lydia, wife of Edward Barrett CURTIES, Esq; Francis, Frederick George & Owen, who all three died in infancy. A true patriot, a kind and liberal landlord, an unfailing friend to the poor, faithful in every relation of public and private life, he served his generation according to the will of God, and now rests in sure and certain hope of a blessed resurrection, through the merits of his redeemer, born June 3rd, 1776, died May 14th 1857. "He that believeth in me hath everlasting life". John c.6, v.47.
7. (Same as last tablet). Floretta Mary Ann, only daughter of Thomas CHANDLESS, of York Place, London, Esq., the beloved wife of Thomas Twisden HODGES, Esq., born August 28th 1797, died at Sandgate April 18th 1849, leaving no issue. Her devoted affection for her husband, her extensive and unostentatious charities to the sick and distressed poor, will never be forgotten by those who knew her well. May our blessed redeemer reward her in his heavenly kingdom. Her mortal remains are placed in the family vault in this church, awaiting a joyful resurrection.
8. (On the floor behind the organ). Here lyes the body of Edward GULDEFORD of Hempsted, Esq. who dyed the 4 of September 1678. And Anne Guldeford his wife, daughter of Sir Robert THROCKMORTON of Coughton in the county of Warwick, who died ye 3 of December 1710. Requiescant in Pace. (Parish register: Dame Anna Mariah Guldeford, widow).
9. Here lyes the body of Dame Mary FORTESCUE, widow of Sir Edward Fortescue of Bragnam, who dyed the 30th of June 1693. Requiescant in Pace. (Register has: 1694 July ye 10th. Dame Mary Ffortescue, widow).
South Chancel.
10. (Mural brass). Under this stone doeth lye buried ye body of Edmond GIBBON late of this parish of Benninden, who dyed ye last of January in Anno Dni. 1607. Who was ye principall founder of ye free scole of Benninden and gave the livinge that thereto belongeth.
11. (East window). A memorial of thanksgiving June 12 1867. J.S.H.C.M.W.H. (On the occasion of the marriage of Hon. John Stewart HARDY).
12. (Window). In memory of Jane Isabel HARDY, born March 16th 1843, died June 21st 1862.
13. (On south wall). P. SCHEEMAKERS, Sculptor, Anno Domini 1750. Near this place are deposited the remains of the Right Honourable Sir John NORRIS of Hempstead, who after fifty years faithful service in the Royal Navy, attained the supreme Command, with the rank of Admiral of the Fleet & Vice Admiral of England. It is but bare justice to his memory to say, since so much at least may be said with the strictest truth, that there never breathed a better Seaman, a greater Officer, a braver Man, a more zealous Wellwisher to the present Establishment, nor consequently a truer Englishman than this Sir John Norris.
14. (There is a marble bust above the monument, and beneath the inscription: Arms: Quarterly, argent and gules, a fret or; impaling Arg. a cross sa. between four Cornish choughs ppr. Crest: A Cornish chough rising ppr. Curiously the date of his death is not given, but Hasted III, p.83 says, Sir John Norris, Knt., died May 13, 1749, leaving issue by Elizabeth his wife, daughter of Matthew, Lord AYLMER, 4 sons, of whom John Norris Esq., his eldest, succeeded him here, and resided at Hemsted).
15. (Beneath the foregoing). Sacred to the beloved memory of Mrs Sarah NORRIS, daughter of the Right Honourable Sir John Norris. The delight and constant source of inexpressible happiness to all who knew her. Her soul was delivered from this earthly prison on January 19th 1762 in the 50th year of her age, to receive the reward of the righteous in the paradise of God. Reader, if a life who uniform pursuit was every virtue that could adorn her sex, if an illustrious example of uncommon piety in a dissipated age, if a brightest elegance of manners with the warmest benevolence of soul mark the character of a woman worthy to be recorded to posterity, here let the tear drop and hence receive the accomplished portrait of female excellence. Her afflicted nephew, John AMBROSE, of Mount Ambrose in the county of Dublin, and Kingdom of Ireland, caused this to be inserted, to perpetuate his irreparable loss, and in testimony of his affection for the memory of the best of women. Anno nostrae salutis 1791.
16. (Window). To the memory of Edith Elizabeth GRAHAM, born January 31st 1847, died January 8th 1875.
South aisle
17. Sacred to the memory of John Samuel LAZONBY, Esq. who practised as a surgeon etc. for many years in this parish. He died November 3rd AD 1835, aged 43 years. This tablet is erected by his friends and neighbours, who will long deplore the loss of one so distinguished for his professional skill, zeal and benevolence, so highly respected for his integrity and morals, and so endeared to all by his amiable manners , his unostentatious charity and his unaffected piety.
18. (Brass plate beneath a window). This window is erected in affectionate remembrance of Thomas & Sarah NEVE, AD 1868.
19. Sacred to the memory of Frederick BOYS, the 6th son of the Revd. Daniel Boys, vicar of this parish, and Sarah Rider his wife, who departed this life on the 13th March 1844, aged 24 years.
20. Sacred to the memory of the Revd. Daniel BOYS, M.A. of St Johns College, Cambridge. 51 years vicar of this parish and 47 years vicar of Brookland in this county, who died September 11th 1857 aged 80 years. Also of Sarah Rider, widow of the above named Daniel Boys, she died August 4th 1863 aged 79 years.
21. Sacred to the memory of Daniel BOYS, eldest son of the above named Daniel Boys, and late of this parish and of Finchley Road, Hampstead, who departed this life 23rd October 1873 aged 65 years. His strict integrity, combined with his many virtues, endeared him to all who knew him.
22. (Ornamental brass plate on the wall). The body and chancel of this church, being much dilapidated, were to a great extent rebuilt beautified and with the exception of the font, entirely refurbished in the years of our Lord 1861 and 1862 at the sole expense of The Right Honourable Gathorne HARDY, MP of Hemsted Park in this parish. The church was reopened for Divine service Easter Day A.D. 1862 and the inhabitants of Benenden, desirous to record their gratitude to God and their deep sense of obligation to their benefactor for this good work, have erected this tablet as a memorial to future generations. August A.D. 1866.
23. In memory of Mary, wife of Thomas HUNT and one of the daughters of Anthony PAUL of Halden in this county. She departed this life in the month of January 1759. Thomas Hunt above named who departed this life in the month of May 1783. Philadelphia, wife of Paul Hunt, who departed this life in the month of October 1792. Rebecca MAGDALEN, widow of the above named Thomas Hunt, who departed this life in the month of May 1805, and of Paul Hunt, above named, who departed this life without issue, in the month of May 1826 aged 71 years. He was the only child of Thomas Hunt by Mary his wife and the only surviving descendant of Anthony Paul.
Tower.
24. (Brass in front of ringing floor). The west window of this church was erected in memory of Thomas Law HODGES, Esq. by the tenantry on the Hemsted estate, AD 1866.
25. This church was ruined by a storm of thunder and lightning 30th December 1672 and rebuilt 1677 and finished in the year 1678. Stephen SHARPEIGH, Gent, Richard CRYER, Churchwardens; Richard SHARPE, Gent, Thomas HUNT, Sidemen; James MUNN, John CHITTENDEN, Churchwardens for the year 1713. (On the fly leaf of the Parish Register, which begins 1653, is this entry: July 21 1678 first child baptised in the new church).

26. Sacred to the memory of Richard DAVIS, Esquire, of this parish who departed this life 13th November 1828 aged 72 years, and of Margaret, relict of the above, who departed this life 28th May 1847 aged 84 years.

27. East of the church (within enclosed ground). An unspotted life is old age. Harold GATHORNE-HARDY, born 24th March 1850, died 11th June 1881. "He that believeth in me though he were dead yet shall he live".
28. "He giveth His beloved sleep". Jane Isabel HARDY, born March 16 1843, died June 21, 1862.
29. Sacred to the memory of Thomas MANWARING of this parish who died November 28th 1849, aged 50 years.
30. Sacred to the memory of Edward GOWER, son of Edward and Elizabeth Gower of this parish, who died June 17th 1823 aged 63 years. Also Mary their daughter, who died May 16th 1835 aged 68 years. Also Elizabeth their daughter, who died February 25th 1836 aged 71 years.
31. In memory of Edward GOWER, Senior, late of this parish, who died 4th July 1804 aged 68 years. Also Elizabeth his wife, who died 18th July 1794 aged 65 years. John their son died 15th June 1767 aged 4 years. Their surviving issue: Edward, Elizabeth, Mary and Ann. As also John, his son (by Elizabeth his second wife, whom he left surviving), who died in his infancy. Likewise near this place are buried in one grave the father and mother of the said Edward Gower, who died nearly at the same time. Also their sons George, John, Robert and his wife.
32. Sacred to the memory of Robert SHOOBRIDGE, who died November 26th 1874 aged 79 years.
33. Sarah, wife of Robert Shoobridge of this parish, who died May 9th 1828 aged 39 years. Left issue surviving 5 sons and 1 daughter, viz: Thomas, George, Robert, James, Charles and Silvester.
34. Sacred to the memory of Robert SHOOBRIDGE of this parish who died May 10th 1848 aged 81 years, leaving a widow, four sons and two daughters, viz: Richard, John, Robert, Samuel, Mary and Sarah. Also of Sarah, wife of the above who died February 23rd 1854 aged 84 years.
35. In memory of William SHOOBRIDGE who died 26th June 1819 aged 46 years. Also of Philadelphia his wife who died 7th April 1845 aged 77 years.
36. Sarah SHOOBRIDGE died November 22 1781 aged 1 year and 10 months.
37. In memory of James, son of Joseph and Ann SHOOBRIDGE of this parish who died the 21st of May 1825 aged 10 months and 10 days.
38. (Upright cross). Charles NEVE, late curate of Woolston, eldest son of Richard and Emma Neve, born December 15 1858, entered into rest March 12 1886. "Watch and pray".
39. In memory of Charles MARSHALL, M.A., Vicar of St Bride’s, Fleet Street for 36 years, and Prebendary of St Paul’s, who died 29th of January 1883 in the 80th year of his age. And of Sarah Elizabeth, his wife, who died at her residence, Ripley Court, Surrey on the 4th of August 1883 in her 72nd year. "I know that my redeemer liveth". Job XIX 25.
40a. In memory of Francis BOYS, born 31st May 1821, died 10th October 1878.
40b. In affectionate remembrance of Daniel BOYS, the eldest son of the late Reverend Daniel Boys, for many years vicar of this parish, born 28th August 1808, died 23rd October 1873.
41. Erected to the memory of John DUNGEY, late of Maidstone, who departed this life July 8th 1831 aged 63 years. Also Ann, wife of the above, who departed this life January 28th 1830 aged 60 years. "And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgement". This stone was erected by order of his sole executor, Mr John KIRBY of Maidstone, victualler.
42. "Our days upon earth are a shadow". Job. 8 Chap. 9 Ver. Sacred to the memory of Jane, wife of Owen SOUTHON, who died December 4th 1852 aged 24 years, leaving a husband and one son, viz: James Shoobridge, aged 16 months, to lament the loss of an affectionate wife and a kind mother. Also of the above named James Shoobridge Southon, born August 7th 1851 died April 16th 1855. "The Lord gave, and the Lord hath taken away: blessed be the name of the Lord". Job. 1 Chap. xii Ver.
43. In memory of Jane, the kind and affectionate wife of James SHOOBRIDGE of this parish, who died on March the 3rd 1847 aged 71 years. Also the above named James Shoobridge, who died on May the 4th 1853, aged 77 years. "Life is short, death is sure, sin the cause, Christ the cure".
44. In memory of Elizabeth, wife of William BARROW, who died July ye 22nd 1770 aged 20 years. Also William her son, who died an infant. "She like a rose was fresh and gay, but now is cut down and lies like clay".
45. (Double headstone). In memory of James BARROW of this parish, yeoman, who died ye 19th of August 1757 aged 47 years. Also in memory of Elizabeth, wife of James Barrow. She died May ye 15th 1782 aged 71 years. Left issue 5 sons and one daughter: James, William, Thomas, Larence, John and Elizabeth.
46. In memory of John BARNS of this parish who died December 11th 1833 aged 26 years, leaving a widow and one daughter, Mirriam, to lament their loss. Also of Miriam CLARK, daughter of the above who departed this life September 1st 1862 aged 29 years.
47. (On the side of a ledger stone). In memory of Emma EDGE, born 27 November 1817, married 31 January 1839, and died 25 November 1871.

48. Sacred to the memory of George LANSDELL of Eaglesden in this parish, who died August 8th 1881 aged 71 years. "His soul to Him who gave it rose, God led it to its long repose, its glorious rest". Also of Harriet, wife of the above who died April 30th 1887 aged 73 years. "Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord".
49. In affectionate remembrance of Joseph RELF of Mount Pleasant, who died June 26th 1865 aged 43 years, leaving surviving a widow and 4 children, viz: Eliza Jane, Joseph, Katherine and John.
50. Sacred to the memory of Joseph RELF, yeoman of this parish, who died May 12th 1844 aged 73 years. Left surviving Frances his widow and two children, 1 son and 1 daughter, viz: Joseph and Frances Jane, also Caroline Elizabeth, daughter of the above Joseph and Frances Relf who died September 13th 1843 aged 22 years. "Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints".
51. In memory of Rohn RELF of this parish, who departed this life 24th February 1823 aged 85 years. Also Elizabeth his first wife, who died 8th September 1772 aged 28 years. And of Jemima his second wife, who died 30th July 1790 aged 43 years. Also of one daughter Elizabeth, aged 25 years, is buried in the adjoining grave. Left surviving by his former wife 2 sons and 2 daughters, and by the latter 2 sons and 3 daughters.
52. In memory of John GUDE of this parish, who died January 20th 1793 aged 59 years. Left issue 1 son and 2 daughters, viz: John, Mary and Elizabeth. Also Mary his wife who died September 20th 1797 aged 67 years.
53. In memory of Mary, eldest daughter of John and Mary GUDE, second wife of John SPARKS of this parish, who departed this life (with a cancer in the breast) February the 24th 1817, aged 54 years.
54. In memory of John GUDE, bachelor, son of John and Mary Gude of this parish, who died March 16th 1832 aged 68 years.
55. In memory of John WENMAN of this parish who died June 21st 1821 aged 46 years, leaving a widow, 3 sons and 1 daughter. Also Elizabeth, wife of the above who died September 14th 1845 aged 79 years.
56. In memory of George, son of John and Elizabeth WENMAN of this parish who died January 19th 1837 aged 31 years. Also Emma, born January 9th 1843 died September 18th 1848. Thomas Smith, born June 19th 1833, died October 4th 1848. Ellen Elizabeth, born July 29th 1847, died March 25th 1849. Frederick George born January 13th 1839, died April 6th 1861, children of John Gude and Sarah Wenman.
57. In affectionate remembrance of Mary GUDE, the beloved wife of Frederick TURTLE, M.D. of London. Born January 11th 1832, died December 10th 1864.
58. (Close to the Vicarage gardens). Sacred to the memory of John SPARKS, late of Stansted in the county of Hertfordshire, who departed this life November 30th 1825 aged 61 years.
59. In memory of Mary, wife of John SPARKS, who departed this life January 18th 1807 aged 42 years.
60. In memory of Amy, wife of Thomas DAY of this parish who died April the 30th 1806 aged 51 years. Left issue one son, James.
61. Sally BROWN died November 13 1778 aged 20.
62. Ann BROWN died June 17 1771 aged 7 months. (Register 1771. June 21, Ann, daughter of Greenland Brown, infant).
63. Sacred to the memory of Ann, widow of Mr W. MASTERS of Rolvenden, formerly the wife of Mr J. SPARKS of this parish, and for twenty years a faithful servant and friend to the family of Thomas Law HODGES, Esq., late of Hemsted. She departed this life in humble hope of a blessed resurrection through the merits of her Redeemer on the 4th of September 1860, aged 77 years. "Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord".
64. Sacred to the memory of William BUCKLAND of this parish, who died March 11th 1833, aged 71 years. Left surviving Rebecca his wife, two sons and one daughter. Also of Rebecca, wife of the above who died January 10th 1852 aged 89 years.
65. Sacred to the memory of Thomas Elcock BUCKLAND, son of William and Rebecca Buckland of this parish, who died November the 23rd 1814 in the 31st year of his age.
66. Sacred to the memory of William, son of William and Rebecca BUCKLAND of this parish, who died December the 22nd 1809 in the 23rd year of his age. Also James and George their sons, who died in their infancy.
67. In memory of Thomas, son of George and Rebelle ELCOCK of this parish, who died August 6th 1783 aged 10 years and 11 months.
68. Sacred to the memory of Rebelle, wife of George ELCOCK of this parish, who died March the 26th 1815 aged 72 years. Left surviving two daughters, Rebecca and Ann. Also Ann, daughter of the above George and Rebella Elcock, died January the 14th 1817, aged 48 years.
69. (Covered with moss, difficult to read). Sacred to the memory of two children [of] Samuel and Philadelphia BARNS, late of this parish. Caroline died October 30th 1815 aged 5 years and 8 months. Amos died December 7th 1815 aged 2 years and 4 months.
70. In memory of William TYE of this parish. He died June 14 1774 aged 60 years. Also in memory of Elizabeth RABSON, late of this parish, spinster. She died December 15 1802 aged 75 years.
71. Sacred to the memory of Richard MILLS of Pump House in this parish, who departed this life March 5th 1845 in the 82nd year of his age. Also Elizabeth his wife, who died March 21st 1845 in the 66th year of her age. Left surviving 3 sons, Richard, George and Edmund.
72. In memory of Richard MILLS, late of Pump farm in this parish, who died January 25th 1882 aged 83 years.
73. "Thy will be done". In affectionate remembrance of Peter PINYON, Esquire, surgeon of this parish, who died December 31st 1873 aged 42 years. Universally respected, leaving a widow and one son, George Beale. Also of Fanny WITHERDEN, wife of the above Peter Pinyon, who died April 14th 1884 aged 49 years.
74a. In affectionate remembrance of Richard FARLEY of this parish, who died February 12th 1874 aged 57 years, leaving Frances Matilda his widow, to mourn her loss. "Watch therefore, for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come".
74b. Here rest the remains of Henrietta Matilda, wife of William WESTON, and dearly loved child of William & Mary CHENNELL. Died May 29th 1872 aged 41 years. "Come unto me all that are weary and heavy laden and I will give you rest". This stone is erected in fond remembrance by her mother.
75. Sacred to the memory of Charlotte, daughter of Richard and Elizabeth MILLS of this parish, who departed this life at Maidstone in this county, December 5th 1835 aged 25 years. Also Eliza, their daughter died March 27th 1837 aged 21 years.
76. In memory of Alfred, son of Richard and Elizabeth MILLS of this parish, who departed this life October 22nd 1810 aged 7 years.
77. In memory of Thomas DRURY of this parish, yeoman, who died January ye 6th 1768 aged 83 years. Also Rebekah his wife who died March ye 22nd 1765 aged 78 years.
78. Here lieth ye body of Sarah, wife of Joseph ILDEN of ye parish. She died ye 5th of November 1748 in ye 85th year of her age.
79. Here lieth ye body of Robert HAYWARD, yeoman in this parish, who departed ye life November ye 11th 1751, aged 61 years. Left Ann his wife. By her he had 5 sons and one daughter, William, Isaac and Samuell, deceased, now surviving him Robert, James and Elizabeth.

80. Sacred to the memory of Thomas BLACKWELL, late of this parish, who departed this life February 13th 1830 aged 56 years, leaving a widow, 4 sons and 3 daughters, viz: Thomas, William, Edward, John, Mary Ann, Elizabeth and Sarah Charity. Also of Mary, wife of the above named, who departed this life December 20th 1855, aged 68 years. Also of Elizabeth, daughter of the above who died March 25th 1851 aged 35 years.
81. James, son of Thomas and Mary BLACKWELL, who died March 31st 1829 aged 4 years.
82. Sacred to the memory of John BUSBRIDGE of Staplehurst, who departed this life May the 2nd 1816 aged 72 years. Also Jane, wife of the said John Busbridge, who departed this life July the 19th 1817 aged 52 years. Left issue: Two sons and two daughters, viz: John, William, Mary and Ann. "Be serious Friend to watch the great affair, t’will be too late when thou art lodged here".
83. Sacred to the memory of Jane, the beloved wife of Thomas WIGHTWICK of Ramsden in this parish, who died 28th September 1870 aged 72 years. Also to the memory of the aforesaid Thomas Wightwick who died 31st January 1875 aged 81 years.
84. This stone is set up in memory of Sophia Summers, who died at Cranbrook February 6th 1876 aged 92 years and 11 months, by W.J. EDGE, vicar of this parish, in token of the high esteem in which she was held by himself and by all his family, for four generations.

91. Here lye ye body of Richard, son of Alexander and Margaret NARWOOD of this parish, who died ye 13th of September 1749 in the 49th year of his age. The above Alexander and Margaret had 9 children, viz: Mary, Ann, Mary, Francis, Martha, Sarah, Alexander and Richard. The said Alexander and Margaret and 5 children lie near this stone. The 2nd Mary was interred at Fairly in Sussex, Francis at Thurnham in Kent and Sarah at Rolvenden. Now surviving only Alexander. (Register 1749. September 19, Richard Narrwood).
92. "Ever with the Lord". In fond memory of Mary Jane BURT, who fell asleep in Jesus December 26th 1870 aged 30 years. Also William, father of the above, died May 20th 1843 aged 86 years.

Sacred to the memory of the Reverend Daniel BOYS, M.A., late vicar of this parish, and also of Brookland in this county, who died September 11th 1857, aged 80 years. He left surviving Sarah RIDER his wife, who was the youngest daughter of William Barrington RICHARDSON, Esq. of Bermondsey, Surrey, by whom he had issue 12 children, viz: Daniel, Sarah, Thomas, James, Robert Edward, Emily Jane, George, Frederick, Francis, Charles Octavius, Alfred William and Susannah Catherine. Sarah died July 1st 1839 aged 29 years. Frederick died March 13th 1844 aged 24 years. George died May 17th 1858 aged 40 years.
94. Sacred to the memory of Sarah RIDER, widow of the Reverend Daniel BOYS, born 20th March 1784, died 4th August 1863.
95. Sacred to the memory of George GOLDSMITH of this parish, bachelor, who departed this life June 1st 1842 aged 69 years. He was for upwards of forty years a faithful servant to Mr John RICHARDSON of Sarnden in this parish. This stone was erected by James GOLDSMITH as a tribute of esteem and affection.

115. Beneath this stone are deposited the remains of Joseph, son of Mr Jenkin HAGUE of Biddenden, Kent, and Sarah his wife. He died at the early aged of 20, November 24th 1813, having conducted himself in all instances as a dutiful son to his parents, and an example of good morals to those of his own age. His afflicted mother erects this stone to commemorate his worth, and her own great and premature loss of an affectionate child.

149. (Inserted in east wall of south aisle a Coat of Arms). Near this place lieth the body of Edmund GIBBON, who died January 1727 aged 53 and Sarah, his wife, who died June 1751 aged 75. They had three sons and two daughters. The surviving are Sarah who married Samuel PLUMER of Sedlescomb in Sussex, gent, who also lies in a vault near. Francis, who married the daughter of Samuel STILEMAN of Otford in Kent, gent. Here lieth the body of Francis Gibbon of Cranbrook who departed this life February the 20th 1756 aged 53 years. His said wife is also buried here. She died 29th September 1785 aged 77 years. Their only son Walter was buried in Clerkenwell churchyard. The same vault contains Sarah, wife of the said Samuel Plummer, their daughter Martha, wife of William WARD of this parish, and their daughters Martha, Elizabeth and Sarah. The last married William CLEVELAND of London, who died September 1820 and lies in the same vault with Sarah his wife, who died July 19th 1842 aged 79 years. In the said vault lies also Sarah Cleveland, the youngest daughter of the said William and Sarah Cleveland, who died April 3rd 1869 aged 77 years. (Register, 1727. January 15. Mr Edmund Gibbon, sen. He lived in the service of Thomas Hallett HODGES, Esquire and of his son nearly thirty four years, and by his integrity and fidelity justified the confidence reposed in him. This stone was erected by Thomas Law Hodges, Esquire to record his esteem for an old and faithful servant.

Here lyeth ye body of Elizabeth, wife of Richard Butcher, and eldest daughter of David HARLOCK, both of ye parish. She died August ye 2 1739 in ye 35th year of her age. Had issue 8 children, of whom 4 survive, John, Elizabeth, Thomas and Mary. In memory of one of the best of wives.
292. Sacred to the memory of Ann, daughter of Thomas and Ann REEVES of this parish, who died June 5th 1842 in the 34th year of her age.
293. Sacred to the memory of Thomas REEVES of this parish, who died January 1st 1838 in the 69th year of his age. Ann, wife of Thomas Reeves of this parish, who departed this life November 21st 1832 in the 63rd year of her age. Left issue surviving four sons and two daughters, viz: Edward Ayearst, Thomas, Francis, Richard, Jane and Ann.
294. Sacred to the memory of Mary Ann REEVES, daughter of Thomas and Ann Reeves of this parish, who died April the 28th 1806 in the 14th year of her age. And also of John Reeves their son, who died the 9th of September 1813 in the 7th year of his age.

295. Sacred to the memory of Elizabeth, wife of John NASH, tailor of this parish, who died July 25th 1856 aged 71 years. Left surviving 2 sons and 3 daughters. "Blessed are the dead that die in the Lord". Also the above named John Nash, who died January 29th 1874 aged 84 years.
296. In memory of Thomas POTTER of this parish who died May 25th 1810 aged 82 years. Also of Elizabeth his wife who died August 27th 1795 aged 66 years. "Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth".
297. (On top of an altar tomb close to north porch). Here lieth the body of Francis SMITH Junior and Elizabeth his wife (Elizabeth was daughter of Luke and Elizabeth WILLORD of this parish). She ……/ 1713 they left 5 children, viz: ……../ Francis Smith died April 25 1718 in the 28 year of his age (broken). (Register 1713. June 8. Ffrancis Smith poor).
298. Sacred to the memory of Walter, second son of Walter OTTE Esq. of Plumbors Hall, Essex who departed this life August 17th 1843 aged 13 yers.
299. In memory of John WENMAN, carpenter, of this parish who died March 24th 1844 aged 73 years. Also Ann his wife died December 1st 1852 aged 79 years, youngest daughter of Edward GOWER of this parish, left issue Edward Gower and John.
300. In memory of Jeffery GILBERT who died January 28th 1838 aged 83 years. Also of Mary, wife of Jeffery Gilbert, blacksmith, of this parish, who died November the 14th 1821 aged 68 years. Left issue 3 sons, Jesse, John and Samuel. "Here let her rest, in undisturbed dust, until the resurrection of the just".
301. Sacred to the memory of Thomas SOUTHON of this parish who departed this life November 14th 1826 aged 56 years. Also Elizabeth, wife of the above named, who died December 24th 1841 aged 71 years. Left issue eight sons and one daughter.
302. In memory of children of Thomas and Sophia SOUTHON. Ellen, born July 1st 1828, died December 25th 1829. Iden, born May 23rd 1830, died June 23rd 1832. Sabina, born January 27th 1837, died March 5 1838. "Our rest together is in the dust".
303. Sacred to the memory of Harry Frederick, son of Humphrey Robert and Mary PORTER, born at Hemstead May 30th 1854, died August 27th 1857. "Suffer little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of Heaven". St Luke, Chap.18, v.16.

306. Elizabeth, wife of Thomas MUNN of this place, brick maker, died 9th May 1820 aged 73 years. Also the above said Thomas Munn who died August 21st 1836 aged 77 years. Left issue Thomas, James and John.
307. In memory of Maria, daughter of Thomas and Margaret MUNN of this parish, who was born January 25th 1813 and departed this life December 5th 1814.
308. In memory of Elizabeth Jane, daughter of Charles and Elizabeth Ann MILLER of Frittenden, who died November 27th 1834 aged 1 year and 6 months. Also Mary Ann, their daughter, who died December 2nd 1836 aged 5 years. Also George Charles, their son died July 16th 1839 aged 4 years and 4 months. Also Henry Lovell their son who died May 8th 1840 aged 1 month.
309. "In the midst of life we are in death". In memory of Edwin SOUTHON of this parish who died April 21st 1858 aged 30 years. He left surviving a widow and one daughter.
310. In memory of Martha Southon LONGLEY, died at Cranbrook August 8th 1862 aged 15 months, the beloved child of Giles and Martha Ann Longley of London, formerly of this parish. "Suffer little children to come unto me and forbid them not, for of such is the kingdom of God".
311. Sacred to the memory of George SOUTHON of this parish, yeoman, who departed this life April 19th 1856 aged 63 years. Left surviving a widow, five sons and three daughters. Also of Sarah, wife of the above who died July 15th 1870 aged 71 years.
312. Sacred to the memory of Elizabeth, wife of Cornelius COLEBROOK of this parish who died April 13th 1857 aged 33 years, leaving a husband and infant son, Ernest, to lament the loss of an affectionate wife and kind mother. "Prepare to meet thy God".
313. In memory of Frederick SOUTHON, youngest son of George and Sarah Southon, who died 28th December 1865 aged 32 years.
314. Sacred to the memory of John ASHMOLE, son of Elias and Ann Ashmole, who died June 29th 1842 aged 1 year and 10 months.
315. Sacred to the memory of Thomas MUNN, late of Tenterden, cordwainer, who departed this life 25th February 1816 aged 58 years. Left issue by Elizabeth his wife Jarvis, Thomas, Sarah and Charlotte.
316. Erected to the memory of Elizabeth, wife of Jarvis MUNN of this parish, who died November 13th 1839 aged 64 years. Also of the above Jarvis Munn who died July 17th 1861 aged 80 years. Left issue surviving 7 children, Jarvis, Samuel, William, Thomas, George, Sarah and David.

317. In memory of Martha PUXTY of Rose Cottage. Born December 8th 1828, died January 4th 1888. "A light is from the household gone, a voice we loved is still, a place is vacant in our home which never can be filled".
318. Sacred to the memory of Henry CORK who died December 30th 1886 aged 82 years. Also of Mary, wife of the above, who died March 20th 1878 aged 74 years. "It is sown in weakness, it is raised in power". Left surviving Sarah, Elizabeth, George, Albert, Henry, Maria and Edwin.
319. Sacred to the memory of Reynolds MARSHALL who died May 3rd 1887 aged 83 years. Also of Martha, wife of the above, who died March 4th 1867 aged 64 years. Left surviving 3 sons and 2 daughters, viz: Reynolds, John, Elizabeth, Stephen and Lydia.

During the restoration of Benenden Church 1861-62, the gravestones lying in the floor of the north and south aisles were necessarily covered by the New York.
The following are faithful copies of the several inscriptions:
320. At a distance of 2ft 6in. from east wall, and 9ft 8in. from south wall lies a stone on which is inscribed a shield, containing per chev. three elephants’ heads erased. Crest: an elephant’s head erased (the lines denoting colours are obliterated). Just below the Coat of Arms is the following:
Hic jacet Johannes SAUNDERS LL.B. quondam Vicarius de Bennenden in Comitatu Cantii. Obiit 5 die Aprilis 1724. Aetatis Suae 50.
Serius aut citius Sedem properamus ad unam: Heu dimus (?) huc omnes, haec est domus ultima nobis.
On the same stone under the foregoing is the following: Richardus Saunders, Clericus, quondam Rector de Westley in Com. Cantabrigiae, et nunc Minister de Hawkhurst in Com. Cantii. Amantissimus fratri posuit. (Parish register 1724. April 10. The Revd. John Saunders, vicar).
321. At a distance of 13 feet from east wall and 8ft 4in. from south wall is a very large stone with merely the inscription F. BOYS 1844.
322. At a distance of 22ft 6in. from east wall, and 7ft 8in. from south wall is a large stone with following inscription: Sacred to the memory of Anna Maria, eldest daughter of William and Harriet GOBLE of this parish, who departed this life on the 25th July 1822 aged 15 years. Also to the memory of Harriet, wife of William Goble (spelt Gobee) who departed this life March 30th 1837 aged 51 years. Also to the memory of Mary Ellen, third daughter of William and Harriet Goble, who departed this life September 9th 1845 aged 21 years. Also to the memory of the above William Goble, who departed this life April 11th 1849 aged 68 years.
323. At a distance of 7½ft. from north wall and about 11ft 6in. from chancel aisle steps is a stone with the following inscription: In memory of Henry HEATH, yeoman, who died July the 22nd 1787 aged 30 years. Left issue one son and two daughters. "Calm are the slumbers of the just, and peaceful rest their sacred dust. Till the last trumpet’s solemn sound awakes the dead and cleaves the ground. Then shall this body joyful rise to meet our Saviour in the skies". Also Anna Maria, his wife, who died June 18th 1800 aged 38 years. Their eldest daughter, Anna Maria, who died January 30 1810 aged 19 years.
324. At a distance of 7ft 6in. from north wall and about 18ft from chancel aisle steps is a stone with the following inscriptions: Sacred to the memory of Henry, second son of Samuel and Ann HEATH of this parish, who departed this life on the 9th of December 1822, aged 3 years. Also to the memory of Mary Ann, second daughter of Samuel and Ann Heath who died February 9th 1838 aged 21 years.
325. Opposite door of stairs leading to chamber over the south porch is the following: Here lyeth the body of Samuel HUNT, late of this parish, who departed this life December ye 28 1735 in ye 84th year of his age. Also here lyeth the body of Mary, wife of the said Samuel Hunt, daughter of Richard and Mary GRANT of this parish, gent. She departed this life October the 24th 1740 in the 84th year of her age. They had issue 2 sons and 3 daughters, of whom 4 survive, viz: Mary, Samuel, Deborah, Ann, and Thomas deceased.
326. In north west corner of nave, close in corner, is the following: In memory of Samuel HUNT of this parish, gent, who died December 22nd 1783 aged 64 years. Also Ann his wife, who died May 26 1778 aged 64 years. Also Ann their daughter who died March 18 1774 aged 21 years. Left issue one son, Samuel. Also Deborah, daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth Hunt. She died October 1 1781 aged six months. Likewise Elizabeth their daughter died February 8 1785 aged seven months.

Biographies of Vicars of Benenden, 1323-1888
By diligent search of the Archbishops’ Registers at Lambeth, the books of First Fruits and Institution in the Public Record Office, documents at Canterbury and other sources, an authentic account may be obtained of about fifty Vicars.
1. Henry le WHITE is the first name which has come down to us. He is described as a Presbyter, and was admitted and instituted on the ninth day of October A.D. 1323, to the Vicarage of the Church of Benenden, to which he had been presented by the Religious House of Combwell, the true patrons of the same. Register. Archiepisc. Cantuar. (British Museum Ad. MS 6062 & c. p. 29).
2. William of DOVOR (resigned).
3. Galfridus CADENAY alias Cadenay, on the 25th of November 1361 was at Otford admitted to the Vicarage of Benenden, in the Diocese of Canterbury, rendered vacant by the resignation of Sir William of Dovor, the last Vicar there, in the hands and presentation of the Prior and Convent of Combwell.
4. Alan BOYS, Chaplain, on the 9th of March 1385 was, at Lambeth, admitted by the Lord Archbishop to the Parish Church of Benenden, vacant, in the gift of Edmund STABLEGATE and Alice his wife, etc.
5. Philip HAMON, Chaplain, on the 18th day of June 1389, was at Croydon, admitted to the Perpetual Vicarage of the Parish Church of Benenden, in the Diocese of Canterbury, being vacant, in the presentation of the Prior and Convent of Combwell. He exchanged with his successor for Eastry, and afterwards, in 1414, for the Rectory of Frinsted.
6. Thomas GOLDYNGTON, became Vicar April 1 1404, having been previously at Eastry: after holding Benenden five years, he again effected an exchange for St. John’s, Margate.
7. Thomas BARRE. On September 2 1409 the Archbishop authorised an exchange between Thomas Goldyngton, Vicar of Benenden, and Thomas Barre perpetual Vicar of S. John’s, Margate, in the gift of the Abbot and Convent of St. Augustine’s, Canterbury. After two years Barre again exchanged Benenden, for St. Nicholas Rochester.
8. Thomas CLERE having been previously Vicar of St. Nicholas, Rochester, exchanged the same for the Vicarage of Benenden in December 1411; he however held the latter less than twelve months.
9. Bartholomew Atte WODE. A Certificate of Henry Beaufort, Bishop of Winchester, dated October 1412, sanctions an exchange between Bartholomew Atte Wode Vicar of Ebbesham, and Thomas Clere of Benenden.
10. William de KIRKEBY, formerly Rector of Bytelstede, exchanged the same for Benenden in September 1415, and in less than a year again effected an exchange with his successor for the Parish of Aldermanbury, London
11. Thomas MARCHAM obtained this Benefice in 1416 by exchange for the Parish of Aldermanbury, London, as appears by the Certificate, but in 1423 removed to Shorne.
12. John GRENEHILL, having previously held the Vicarage of Shorne, in the Diocese of Rochester, exchanged the same for Benenden in 1423, but held it only two years, his death occurring in 1425.
13. John MANNYNG, a Chaplain, on July 25 1425, was at Maidstone admitted to the perpetual Vicarage of the Parish Church of St. George, Benenden, in the Diocese of Canterbury, vacant by the death of John Grenehill, the last Vicar there in the gift of the Prior and Convent of the Blessed Mary of Combwell.
14. John MASHAM, formerly Vicar of Heckfield, which he exchanged for Benenden in 1425, this latter however he resigned after a few months.
15. Thomas ALSTON, Chaplain, was on the 15th June 1426 admitted, at Higham-Ferrers, to the Vicarage of Benenden, vacant by the resignation of John Massham, the last Vicar there, in the gift of the Prior and Convent of Combwell. Alston resigned within a month.
16. Thomas KNOCKERE, Chaplain, was admitted Vicar in July 1426, but died in less than a year.
17. John SOMERBY was presented to the Vicarage of Benenden by the Prior and Convent of Combwell on the last day of June 1427, and after holding it twenty years tendered his resignation.
18. Robert MELLER was admitted Vicar of St. George’s, Benenden in July 1447, the benefice being vacant by the resignation of Somerby, and in the patronage of the Prior of Combwell.
19. Henry CRANEBROKE was Prior of the House of St. Mary Madalene, Combwell, and in December 1455 the Archbishop authorised an exchange with William WATSON, Rector of Eythorne. In December 1458
20. Henry Cranebroke exchanged Eythorne for the Vicarage of Cranbrook, with one Thurstan BOLDE. This latter was instituted to Cranbrook August 10 1458. (Annals of Cranbrook Church by W. Tarbutt. Ministers. p.81).
21. William WATSON, according to Hasted, was appointed to Benenden in 1461 and died in 1473 (Wills Prerog. off. Cant).
22. Thomas HEIKAR, M.A. was admitted February 24 1473 to the Perpetual Vicarage of the Parish Church of Benenden, vacant by the death of Sir William Watson, the last Vicar there in the patronage of the Prior and Conventual Church of Combwell.
23. William CLYFFORD was admitted by the Archbishop to the Vicarage of Benenden in June 1482, vacant by the death of Mr Hekyr, and for this turn in the gift of Alexander Colpepyr, Esquire.
24. Richard WYLLESFORD is mentioned by Hasted with the note: "Will Prerog. Off. Cant".
25. George CROWMER was admitted to the Vicarage of S. George’s, Benenden, October 27, 1513, vacant by the death of the last Incumbent, and in the patronage of the Prior and Convent of Combwell. This Vicar is mentioned in the Valor Ecclestiasticus, or survey completed in the 27th year of Henry VIII. (Georgius Crom. .96).
26. Henry STRENSHAM. The name of this Vicar is found in the First Fruits Composition Books at the Record Office. (Persons compounding for First Fruits Hen.Streynsham Cl.2 Aug. 35, Hen.8 Series I. Vol.I. Com. Kanc). Upon the death of the last Incumbent, Strensham was admitted in June 1542 to the Vicarage of Benenden, having been presented to the same by Sir John GAGE, Knight. He enjoyed the Benefice only three years.
27. Richard WATER. S.T.B. succeeded to Benenden upon the death of Strensham, and was admitted by the Archbishop at Lambeth in June 1545, the patronage being then vested in the hands of Sir John GULDEFORD, Knight. (first Fruits: Ricus Water 15 June 37. H.8). [This Vicar is mentioned in the Archdeacon’s Visitations: fols. 13, 40, 84, 126).
28. William DARRELL, M.A. having been presented to the Vicarage of Benenden by Sir John and Lady Mary GULDEFORD, was admitted to the same by the Archbishop in November 1561. The benefice had been rendered vacant by the death of Richard Water. Darrell was also Rector of Little Chart, but did not reside there: Archdeacon’s Visitation 1550-55 (fols. 12, 40, 84, 126). At a Visitation held in Ashford Church in 1563 it was presented that William Darrell was non resident, and the Vicarage stood in need of repairs (f.5). The Curate was Maurice PENNYALL, but they had no parson last quarter. First Fruits. Wilts Dorell. 27 Mar. 5. Eliz).
29. In A.D. 1569 the Vicarage was vacant, the Church being served by George GRAYNE, a married man holding no other benefice. He did not preach, nor was he a Graduate. There were at that time 148 houses, and 547 Communicants in the Parish. (F.14).
30. William SMYTH, upon the 27th of January 1576 was admitted by the Archbishop to the Perpetual Vicarage of the Parish Church of Benenden, the patronage having lapsed to Queen Elizabeth. (First Fruits, Wiltus Smith, 28 Jan. 19. Eliz).
31. Mark SAUNDERS was instituted to the Parish Church of Benenden in February 1579, the presentation to the same being again in the hands of the Crown. The paving of the Chancel having been presented at the Visitation as being in "some decay for want of paving", Saunders certified in 1581 that it had been repaired. Two years later complaint was made that the Vicar did not wear the Surplice, and neglected to Catechise the young. (First Fruits: M. Saunders Cl.22 Mar.22 Eliz).
32. Walter JONES, M.A. was instituted on the last day of March 1586, the Church having been rendered vacant by the death of the last Incumbent. The Crown once more presented in consequence of the minority of Sir Henry GULDEFORD, Knight. After holding the Benefice upwards of twenty years Jones was deprived. (Whitgift.466.b. p.233).,(First Fruits: Walters Jones 8 Apr. 28.Eliz). In 1558 this Vicar is thus mentioned in the Archdeacon’s Visitation: Visitacio dni Archini Cant. Decanatus Charinge: "Bennenden. Vicarius dns Walterus Jones artiu magr. compt".
33. Vincent HUFFAM, M.A. was Vicar of Seasalter in 1596, and in April 1608 was instituted to Benenden, his patron being Sir Henry GULDEFORD, Knight. Huffam resigned both these Benefices in 1611. That Huffam was a married man appears from an amusing Presentment made at the Archdeacon’s Visitation. (First Fruits: Vincent Huffam 6 Jan. 6 Jac).
34. Richard AUSTEN, B.A. Upon the resignation of Huffam, Sir Henry GULDEFORD, Knight, appointed Richard Austen as his successor. The Archbishop instituted him June 1611. According to Hasted he died in 1643. Abbot. 388. a.p. 150. (First Fruits: Ricus Austen 6 Jun. 9 jac).
35. Nathanial WILMOTT, B.A., was instituted according to Hasted March 22 1643, his patroness having been Sarah SHARP, widow, hac. vice. The Liber Institutionum however gives November 13 1646 as the date. (Lib.Inst. p.20 at Record Office. 13 Nov. 1646. Nath: Willmott £17.12s.6d. First Fruits. 13 Nov.22 Carol).
36. Joseph USBORNE, alias OSBORN, was admitted to Benenden Vicarage by Oliver CROMWELL in 1658. Particulars of his appointment are to be found at Lambeth Library. He held the Benefice until his ejectment in 1662. Calamy notices at length the career of this Vicar, and states that one Austin was turned out of the living for insufficiency, and that the people got Osborn to preach among them. It is certain however that Nathaniel Wilmott was his immediate predecessor. He is said to have preached in Sussex, as well as in London, and various parts of Kent, after his ejectment from Benenden, and finally retired to Staplehurst, where he died December 28 1714 at the ripe age of 85.
37. Staplehurst Parish Register. 1714, Jan.3. Buried Jos. USBORN. 1712, Febr.20. Buried the wife of Jos. Usborne. There is an altar tomb in the churchyard there, near the south porch, thus inscribed: (on the south side). Here’s intered ye body of Mr Joseph Usborne, Minister of ye Gospel, who departed this life December ye 28 1714 aged 85 years. (On the north side) Also ye body of his dearly loving wife Mrs Grace Usborne who departed this life February ye 16th 1712 in the 81st year of her age.
It seems probable that Usborne selected Staplehurst as his place of retirement, because in Daniel POYNTELL, the Rector, he found a kindred spirit, both being ejected from their Benefices by the Bartholomew Act of 1662.
Major Usborne, the present possessor of ‘Loddenden’, Staplehurst, states that Joseph was third son of Thomas Usborne of Loddenden, further that he "appears as family arbitrator" and that his small branch died out.
Benenden [V]. Mr Joseph USBORNE.
One Austin being turned out of this living for insufficiency, the people got Mr Osborn to preach among them for half a year, during which time he had an invitation to a place in Sussex.
The people of Benenden having notice of it, met together, and united in an earnest request to Mr Osborn to continue with them. As the income was but small, they readily entered into a subscription to increase it to £60.
The Patron of the living being abroad with KING CHARLES, it fell into the hands of a committee in London to provide for the place.
When the Protector took upon him to place and displace Ministers Mr Osborn was tried by a committee, when he brought a certificate from the people, and another from the neighbouring Ministers as to his abilities and behaviour. He obtained the Protector’s order for the living, and the Vicarage house being gone to decay, the committee agreed to repair it.
At the Restoration in 1660, when all the Ministers whom Oliver put in, were to be immediately turned out, HENDON, Esq., the patron who came over with King Charles, finding Mr Osborn greatly beloved by the people, and knowing the living to be but small, would not present any one in his room. His brother also (afterwards Sir John Hendon) desired him to continue there and, if he possibly could, to conform.
But he told him that faith and a good conscience would stand him in more stead than a hundred livings, and he quitted this Vicarage in 1662.
Mr BUCK, the Dean of Rochester, promised him a better living than Benenden, provided he would conform. To which he answered, that if he could have conformed at all, it should have been at Benenden rather than for any other place whatever. His integrity was the more remarkable, as he had six children when he was silenced, and his wife was not got up from lying in of the last of them.
After his ejectment, he lived for sometime in Staplehurst, and then went to Heathfield, Sussex, where he had four children more, and there he continued for several years. He afterwards preached nine years at Brightelmstone (Brighton). About 1681, he was sued for £20 a month, on account of his Nonconformity. Upon this he came to London, and preached some time at Peckham. He afterwards went to Ashford, and from thence to Tenterden, where he continued about nine years.
He spent about nine years more at Bersted, near Maidstone, where he concluded his ministry, by reason of his infirmities, and then returned to Staplehurst, where he finished his course, December 28 1714 aged 85.

Know all men by these presents that the 20th day of July 1658 there was exhibited to the Commissioners for approbabacon of publique preachers a Presentacon of Joseph Usborne Clerke to the Vicarage of Benenden, in the Countie of Kent, made to him by his Highnesse Oliver Lord Protector of the Commonwealth of England etc. the Patron thereof under the greate seale of England together with a Testimony etc. In witnesse etc. Dated at Whitehall the 20th day of August 1658 Jo.Nye, Registrar. Joseph Usborne, Clerke, admitted the 20th day of July 1658 to the Vicarage of Benenden in ye county of Kent upon a pres: exhibited the same day from his Highnes the Lord Protector under the great seal of England and Certificates from Robert GIBSON, A.BROUGHTON, Thomas MONINS, Robert MASCALL, John PLAYER, John DURAND, Daniel POYNTELL, Edward BRIGHT, Joseph WHISTON. Feb.4 1657. Benenden. Ordered that the yearly sume of fforty poundes bee graunted to and for increase of maintenance to the ministr’ of Benenden in the county of Kent, and that the same bee from time to time paid unto such godly and painfull preachers of the Gospell as shall bee settled ministers there, and approued by the Commissioners for approbacon of publique preachers To hold for such time as they shall continue ministers there or further order which wee humbly certifie to his Highness the Lord protector and the Councell. January 14 1658. Ordered that the possessors of the tithes of Benenden in ye county of Kent parcell of the possions of the late Archbpp of Canterbury the Lease whereof is for diverse yeares last past expired doe account with these Trustees on the 10 day of ffebruary next for the mesne profits of the said Rectory incurred since the expiracon of the last Lease thereof when the Trustees doe appoint to treate with him if hee will for a further estate in the prmisses. February 10 1658. Ordered, yet ye possessor of ye tithes of Benenden in the County of Kent parcel of ye passions of ye late Archbishop of Canterbury, the lease whereof is for diverse yeares last past expired doe account with theise Trustees on ye 9th day of March next for ye mesne pfits of ye said Tithes incurred since ye expiracon of the last lease thereof, when the Trustees doe appoint to treat with him, if he will, for a further Estate in ye prmises. 38. Nicholas MONYMAN was presented to Benenden Vicarage by Sir John HENDEN, Knight, and instituted by the Archbishop in September 1662. He was previously Master of Cranbrook Grammar School. The records there contain this note: "1658 November 22 Nicholas Monyman of Appledore", that being all that is said respecting his appointment as master; and from the Parish Books it appears he was present at a Vestry Meeting in 1661.
Then again the School records have this entry: 1663 April 6 Rev. John COOPER, Vicar of Cranbrook. Cooper had been Vicar only five months before he had the Mastership of the School. He held both appointments for some time. Monyman held the Mastership until Cooper was appointed, and therefore did duty at Benenden for five months before he left Cranbrook.
This Vicar was buried at Benenden, as appears by the Parish Register: January 22nd 1700. Nicholas Monyman, late Vicar.
39. John SAUNDERS, LL.B. took his degree from St John’s College, Oxford, November 4 1697 and was by the Chancellor, Masters and Scholars of that University presented to this Vicarage, his institution taking place in July 1700. He died April 5 1724, aged 50 and was buried in Benenden Church, where a Monument formerly existed bearing his Coat of Arms. The Parish Register thus records his burial: 1724, April 10. The Rev. John Saunders, Vicar.
40. John FETHERSTONE, B.A. was instituted to Benenden in April 1724, having been presented thereto by Sir John NORRIS, Knight. He was appointed Vicar of Leysdown July 18 1732 and also on the same day Rector of Warden, both of which he resigned upon his induction into the Vicarage of Bethersden April 6 1734. He died in 1747. 41. Thomas HUDSON was instituted in August 1732, the patronage of the Church of Benenden being then in the hands of Sir John NORRIS, Knight. (Gent. Mag. 1732).
42. John PRINCE, B.A. On the twenty-first day of May in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred thirty nine in the presence of Robert ROUS, Notary Publick, John Prince, Clerk, Batchelor of Arts was instituted by the right Worshipful George PAUL, Doctor of Laws, Vicar General of the most Reverend ffather in God John, by Divine Providence Lord Archbishop of Canterbury, primate of all England and Metropolitan, into the Vicarage of the parish church of Benenden in the county of Kent, and Diocese of Canterbury, vacant by the cession of the last incumbent to which he was presented by Sir John Norris, Knight, the true and undoubted patron thereof, he having first subscribed the several articles and declaration and declared and taken the oaths by law required, and the same day a mandate was issued for inducting the said John Prince, directed to the Archdeacon of Canterbury or his official. 43. Benjamin SLOCOCK, D.D., was of Pembroke College, Oxford. On May 3 1712 he obtained the degree of B.A., his M.A. July 6 1715, B. and D.D. June 23 1735 (Oxford Graduates, 608). Dr Slocock was collated to the Vicarage of Benenden in 1741. It had lapsed to the Archbishop, Sir John Norris not having presented in due time. (Gent. Mag. 1741, pp.554, 609).
On the 28th October 1741 his Grace the Archbishop of Canterbury conferred on Benjamin Slocock Doctor in Divinity the Vicarage of the parish church of Benenden, Kent, vacant by the death of John Prince the last incumbent thereof, and belonging to the donation of collation of his Grace by laps of time for this turn he having first subscribed. (Potter 276.a.).
44. John WILLIAMS, S.C.L. was presented to this Vicarage in the room of Dr Slocock, who resigned. A dispensation was given in 1761 to hold the rectory of Ripple. His successor to the latter was appointed in 1764. (Gent. Mag. 1744. 282).
Williams resigned Benenden in 1761.
On 20th April 1744 in the presence of Robert ROUS, Notary Publick, John Williams, Clerk, student in the civil law, was instituted by the Right Worshipful George PAUL, Doctor of Laws, Vicar General of the Most Reverend Father in God John, Archbishop of Canterbury and into the Vicarage of the parish church of Benenden in Kent, vacant by the resignation of Benjamin Slocock, D.D. the last Vicar to which he was presented by Sir John NORRIS, Knight, of Benenden, the true and undoubted patron. (Potter 288.b).
45. Joseph DUNN, M.A., took his degree from Magdalene College, Cambridge, of which he was a Fellow, B.A. 1759, M.A. 1762. He was presented to Benenden Vicarage in 1761 by Dame Elizabeth NORRIS, and died November 23 1798.
On 4 December 1761 Joseph Dunn, B.A. was instituted into the Vicarage of Benenden, Kent, void by the cession of John Williams, Clerk, the last Vicar, to which he was presented by Dame Elizabeth Norris of Hempsted, the true patroness. (Secker. 302.b).
46. Phillips MONYPENNY, M.A., graduated from St Peter’s College, Cambridge, B.A. 1783, M.A. 1786, and in 1799 obtained a dispensation to hold Benenden with Hadlow Vicarage (Gent. Mag. 1799, 540).
He married at Lambeth Palace Chapel December 13th 1803 Charlotte (born 28 April 1772), second daughter of Sir Edward DERING of Surrenden-Dering, the sixth Baronet, by his second wife Deborah, only daughter of John WINCHESTER, of Nethersole, Kent. She died in 1836 (Gent. Mag). Phillips Monypenny resigned the Vicarage of Benenden in 1803, and was Vicar of Hadlow upwards of forty years. He died at Hadlow house January 4 1841 in the 79th year of his age, and was buried with his wife in Rolvenden Church, where there is a tablet to their memory, on the east wall of the north chancel, with the arms of Monypenny quartering those of Dering.
Rolvenden Church. Underneath are deposited the remains of Charlotte, wife of the Reverend Phillips MONYPENNY, A.M. of Maytham Hall in this parish and Vicar of Hadlow in this county, second daughter of Sir Edward DERING of Surrenden-Dering in this county, the sixth Baronet, by his second wife Deborah, daughter of John WINCHESTER of Nethersole in this county, Esq. Died xii November MDCCCXXXVI aged LXIV years. Underneath are also deposited the remains of the above named Phillips Monypenny who died January the IV MDCCCXLI aged LXXVIII years. (On a black slate tablet). M.S. Carolettae Monypenny uxoris delectissimae hoc posuit monimentum (sic) conjux moestissimus.
Arms. Vert a dolphin, urinant, (or in pale,) tail erect, or.
Crest. Neptune bestriding a dolphin, naiant, in waves of the sea, holding with his dexter hand the reins, and in the sinister his trident, all ppr.; over it the motto Temperat Aequor.

On 24 January 1799 in the presence of William MOORE, Notary Publick, Phillips Moneypenny, Clerk, was instituted to the parish church of Benenden, Kent, vacant by the death of Joseph Dunn, the last incumbent to which he was presented by Thomas Hallet HODGES of Hempstead Place, asserting himself to be the true and undoubted patron thereof. 47. Henry HODGES, B.A. On 12 October 1803 Henry Hodges, Clerk, Bachelor of Arts, was instituted to the Vicarage and parish church of Benenden, Kent, void by the resignation of Phillips Monypenny, Clerk, the last incumbent to which he was presented by Thomas Law HODGES of Hemstead, the true and undoubted patron. (Potter 574).
48. Henry HODGES, M.A. On 14 September 1804 Henry Hodges, Master of Arts, was instituted to the Vicarage and parish church of Benenden, void by the cession of Henry Hodges, Clerk, the last incumbent there, to which he was presented by Thomas Law HODGES of Hemstead, Kent. (Potter 578).
49. Daniel BOYS, M.A., graduated from St John’s College, Cambridge, taking the degree of B.A. IN 1799, and that of M.A. in 1810. His patrons were Charles CARTWRIGHT and others, who in 1805 appointed him Vicar of Benenden, which he held for more than half a century. He was enabled also by dispensation granted in 1809, to hold the Vicarage of Brookland. (Ecclesiastical Annual Register III. 398, pub. 1810).
He married November 9 1807 at Benenden Church Miss Sarah Rider RICHARDSON, youngest daughter of the late William RIDER, Esq. of Bermondsey, Surrey. (Gent. Mag. LXXVII, p. 1074).
By this marriage he had twelve children, whose names are given on his monument in the churchyard. He died September 11 1857 aged 80 years. (Gent. Mag. 1857, p.465) and was buried here.

On the 29 November 1805 Daniel Boys, B.A. was instituted to the Vicarage and parish church of Benenden, Kent, vacant by the cession of the Reverend Henry Hodges, Clerk, the last incumbent, to which he was presented by Charles CARTWRIGHT, heretofore of Narnham, County Notts, but now of White Waltham, County Berkshire, the Rev. John LAW, D.D., Archdeacon of Rochester, Reverend John DISNEY, late of Chelsea now of Hyde near Ingatestone, D.D., and C. LAMB, asserting themselves to be the true patrons. (Sutton II.5).
50. William John EDGE, M.A. was a scholar of Emmanuel College, Cambridge, and it is a somewhat remarkable fact that he was the fifth, and his son, W.H.F. Edge, the present Vicar of Tilford, Surrey, the sixth, member of his family, in successive generations, who were educated at that College.
He took the degree of B.A. (Senior Optime) in 1834, and that of M.A. in 1837, being ordained Deacon June 5 1836 by the Bishop of Gloucester, at St Margaret’s, Westminster, on letters Dimissory from the Bishop of London (Church of England Magazine, I., Ecclesiastical Intelligence, I., 1836), and Priest by the Bishop of London May 21 the following year. He served as Curate of St Nicholas, Colchester, from 1836-1838.
When Priest Mr Edge was presented by his father to the Rectory of Waldingfield, a small parish in the Deanery of Colneis, in the county of Suffolk, and shortly afterwards when Bishop Stanley, of Norwich, revived the Office of Rural Deans in that diocese, he was appointed Rural Dean, and held the Office till he removed from the Diocese in 1848. In this year he was appointed Perpetual Curate of Hartshill, Warwickshire, and in 1851 took sole charge of St John’s, Cheltenham. After this was Rector of St Aldate, Gloucester, 1854 to 1858, when he was appointed Vicar of Benenden by the Right Honourable Gathorne HARDY, MP, the present Lord CRANBROOK.
Soon after Mr Edge came into residence at Benenden a farmer (at whose house, a mile and a half distant from the church, a Wesleyan service was held on Sunday evenings) happened to tell him that the local preacher who conducted it was on the point of removal, and that the people were greatly perplexed by the difficulty of finding a successor. Mr Edge replied that he knew of one who might possibly suit them, that, in fact, it was none other than himself, who was sent into the parish for the express purpose of teaching its inhabitants; and that he was quite ready to carry on the service as hitherto, with extempore prayers if the people wished it, though he should himself rather use the Litany, and that he would have no objection to Wesley’s hymns, on condition that the selection of them was always left to him. The farmer, himself a Wesleyan, jumped at the offer, and said that the poor people would be very grateful; that – as to the prayers – they all had a great love for the Litany, "and, Sir", he added, "bring your own hymn book!". His wife, also a Wesleyan, begged leave to introduce an harmonium, which she would gladly play. The immediate result was, that the old service was not interrupted, but continued without any break or intermission for some four or five years, until a new tenant came into residence, by which time not a few of the congregation had become regular attendants at church, and some of them, including the Wesleyan farmer, communicants.
In the summer of 1865 an incident occurred to which Mr Edge always referred with particular pleasure. A French clergyman, M. le Chanoine CHENNAILLES, whom he had casually met the year before in Paris, and who had been very courteous to him, accepted an invitation to spend a few days with him at Benenden, in the company of a lay friend, who held an office in his church, not unlike that of an English churchwarden. He stipulated that he might wear his sontane, or cassock, "for", said he, "to speak frankly, I have no lay clothes to wear". I willingly assented, and when at my request the tidal train was stopped for the travellers’ convenience, there was a great sensation at Staplehurst station, the general impression being that the Archbishop of Canterbury was the favored party. And when in a morning the good man used to walk round the green, reading his Breviary, the few who met him invariably moved or touched their hats, perhaps taking him for the Archbishop or Chief Rabbi. Had he read aloud, perhaps some idea might have been conveyed to them, as in the case of a former Vicar of Coggeshall, in Essex, who being in the habit of reading aloud in his garden, was set down as a lunatic by a neighbour, who could both see and hear him, till one Sunday morning, as he began to read his sermon over, and in a sonorous voice uttered his text "I am not mad, most noble Festus", the neighbour ceased to regard him as crazy, and always said of him afterwards, "O no, he is not mad, but a very pleasant and courteous old gentleman".
The Vicar’s Parisian friend, who was made a Canon of Notre Dame, soon after his return home, was so charmed by his reception that he invited him to Paris in 1866 and introduced him to many of his brother clergy, and above all to the good Archbishop DARBOY, afterwards murdered by the Commune.
This excellent man, amongst other good things, said to Mr Edge: "There are barriers between us that we did not erect, and which neither you nor I can demolish. But though we are debarred from visible union we can cultivate concord, or unity of hearts, we can love one another and pray for one another, and trust to God for the rest".
The Rev. W.J. Edge preached his last sermon at Benenden, April 15 1877, when he reminded his hearers that he had been their spiritual pastor more than nineteen years. During that period great changes had been wrought, the parish church almost rebuilt, by their Squire’s munificence, and a Mission room erected at East End, besides new schools (those near the church as well as those at East End).
During the period of his Vicariate 889 persons had been baptized (715 by his own hand), 465 parishioners had been buried (331 by himself), and he had at the parish church and at East End preached about 1600 sermons.
The Vicar closed his parting address with St Paul’s words, where he bade farewell to the elders of the Church of Ephesus: "And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of His grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them that are sanctified".
After holding Benenden nearly twenty years, he exchanged this Benefice with his successor for the Vicarage of Holy Trinity, Upper Tooting, which he resigned in 1882.

51. Edward David CREE, graduated from Oriel College, Oxford, receiving his B.A. in 1849, and M.A. in 1852. Was ordained Deacon in 1850, and Priest 1851, Dur. He held the curacy of Newburn, Northumberland, 1850 to 1852, and tutorship of St Peter’s College, Radley, 1852-1855. After holding the Vicarage of Holy Trinity, Upper Tooting, from 1855 to 1877, he exchanged the same for the Vicarage of Benenden. He was appointed Commissary for the Bishop of Kaffraria in 1882. Mr Cree resigned Benenden in 1887, having been Vicar ten years, during which period he greatly improved the Glebe House by adding a new front. He now resides in Eastbourne.
The incumbency of this Vicar was marked by the re-fronting of the Vicarage at the cost to himself of £1000; and the addition of a chancel to East End Chapel by Lord CRANBROOK, also the erection of St George’s Club, and the well, close to the Manor house, in honour of the Queen’s Jubilee, likewise generously provided by the noble Lord.
Mr Cree married in 1855 Augusta, daughter of Rev. C.E. PLATER, Vicar of Newchurch (Gent. Mag. xliv 641); and in 1866, Isabel Laura, daughter of John TAYLOR, Esq. architect. By the latter he has had Norah Lilian (deceased), Herbert Edward, Ernest Wilford, Mary Gwendoline, Edgar Hayley and Effie Edgington.

52. Samuel JOY, M.A. took the degree of B.A. from Worcester College, Oxford, in 1856, when he was awarded by the Examiners a double Honorary Class in the School of Classics and Mathematics, and advanced to the degree of M.A. in 1859, was ordained Deacon in 1857, and Priest 1858. His first Clerical appointment was to the curacy, precentorship and lectureship of Leeds, under Dr HOOK, which he held from 1857 to 1859, when he was appointed Perpetual Curate of Bramley, Yorkshire, which living he resigned in consequence of ill health in 1866. In 1872 he accepted the Vicarage of Long Lane, Derbyshire, until 1875, when the Precentorship of Ripon Cathedral, together with the Vicarage of Ripon were offered to him. This semi-Cathedral, semi-parochial appointment he held until 1884, when he accepted the less laborious charge of the Vicarage of Birstwith, Yorkshire, and was at the same time collated to an Honorary Canonry in Ripon Cathedral. Canon Joy only held the Vicarage of Birstwith for two years, when he was preferred by Viscount CRANBROOK, to the Vicarage of Benenden, where he now resides.
The Arms borne by the Vicar are:

Crest: a hand holding an arrow point downwards.

54. James de BENYNDENNE v. the Prior of Combwell, Re. Parson to the church.
Kent. James de Benyndenne by his attorney offered himself on the fourth day against the Prior of Cumbewell of a plea that he do permit him to present a fit parson to the church of Benyndenne which is void [and] belongs to his gift, etc. And he came not. And it was ordered to the Sheriff that he should summon him etc. And the Sheriff has done nothing therein but sent that he had ordered the bailiffs of the Archbishop of Canterbury who have done nothing therein. Therefore it is ordered to the Sheriff that he omit not on account of the aforesaid liberty but that he summon him that he may be here in 8 days of Saint Martin, etc. And also that he have the bodies of the bailiffs here at the aforesaid term, etc. And whereof etc.

56. Licence for the removal of the Feast of the dedication of the said church.
By the tenor of these presents we Henry etc. that on the part of the Rector and parishioners of the parish church of Benynden of our diocese it appears intimated to us that the feast of the dedication of the said church of Benenden on the feast of St Mathias – namely the 24 day of the month of February was accustomed to be celebrated that however the said Rector and parishioners cannot observe the feast without great inconvenience to themselves on that account they have prayed us that the feast of the dedication of this church aforesaid be celebrated and observed on the Monday next before the feast of the translation of St Thomas, namely the fourth day of the month of July upon which they could flock together more abundantly to the same church to worship and honor God and offer up praises and prayers year by year for ever we decree therefore being favourably inclined to the prayers and intentions of the said Rector and parishioners that their proposed prayer suggested itself for the honor of God and the increase of divine worship we ordain and appoint the feast of the dedication of the aforesaid church to be celebrated on the Monday next before the feast of the translation of St Thomas aforesaid, namely the fourth day of the month of July yearly for ever and that the Rector and parishioners whosoever present and to come of the aforesaid church be summoned for the observance and celebration of this feast on the day of dedication aforesaid.
