Some Monumental Inscriptions of St Nicholas Church, Chislehurst

Some Monumental Inscriptions of St Nicholas Church, Chislehurst, noted by Leland L. Duncan.

Kindly typed up for the website by Pat Tritton

Inscriptions in Chislehurst Churchyard, taken in May, June and July 1890. [Although Duncan's manuscript clearly states that he recorded the M.I.s in 1890, it contains many burials up to 1897]

For the purpose of assisting as far as possible the identification of the various gravestones, the inscriptions are arranged in groups, following the division of the yard by the paths that intersect it:

A.  In the ground on the left of the path leading from the lych gate to the south porch of the church.
B.  In the triangular plot opposite the lych gate.
C.  In the ground on the right of the path leading from the lych gate to the north east gate of the yard.
D.  In the northern portion of the yard.
E.  In the ground round the church.
F.  In the triangular plot opposite the west door of the church.

Many of the stones now described as flat appear to have originally been ordinary headstones.
A.  In the ground on the left of the path leading from the lych gate to the south porch of the church (beginning at the gate and working northwards).
