During December 1919, Mr Leland L. Duncan borrowed from another Kentish antiquarian, Dr. F.W. Cock, F.S.A. an original manuscript in Cock's possession, which Duncan duly copied out in a quarto note book. The original manuscript was a record of the memorial inscriptions found by Joseph and Charles Perkins Gwilt when they surveyed the churchyard of old St Margaret's, Lee, in Kent, on the 22nd August, 1830.

Mrs Barbara Newland Relict of Edmund Newland esq Aunt to the Right Honourable Lady Dacre died 23rd of January 1790 aged 79.
South side. Sacred to the Right Honourable Trevor Charles Roper Baron Dacre born the 25th June 1745. Married the 2nd of March 1773 Mary Jane daughter of Sir Thomas Fludyer Kt and died at his seat in this parish 3rd of July 1794 aged 49 most universally and deservedly lamented. He was a most devout and pious Christian strictly attentive to the performance of every duty to God and man a loyal and faithful subject a zealous supporter of his King and Country a dutiful son affectionate brother a gentle master sincere friend humane benefactor to the poor and a firm protector of the distressed he was a most kind constant and tender husband to his truly afflicted widow who as a testimonial of their distinguished unclouded union for upwards of 21 years their unexampled happiness and of the unbounded confidence in which they lived and as a sincere token of her real gratitude for his uniform endearing affection and particular generosity her deep felt sorrow and tenderest remembrance has erected this unadorned monument and herself inscribed these well known truths to his beloved memory convinced they are most cousonant to the purity of his life his mild disposition his amiable temper and genuine character and his numberless virtues his great benevolence and engaging manners are so universally allowed their loss so truly regretted by every rank and that her unabating attachment and sincere affection are so fully known there can be no stronger acknowledgment of his eminent perfections and her heartfelt grief The meek Christian adorned with perfect faith the virtuous man accompanied by good works relied through divine mediation with humble hope upon the mercy of his god. The resigned Christian submits with pious faith to the will of her God and trusts through the same intercession to his mercy with brightest hope of lasting reunion in eternal bliss. His faithful and mournful widow survived her beloved and deeply lamented husband 14 years 8 months and 8 days and died at her seat in this parish 11th of September 1808 aged 53. Her conduct evinced meek resignation and firm faith constant affection and sincere remembrance and she lived a striking example of submission and trust attachment and hope.

15. In a stone vault on this side and hereunder are interred the bodies of Mr Benjamin James of Peckham in Surrey and of his wife Mrs Elizabeth James. He died 5th April 1740 aged 84 years. She died 5th December 1757 aged 71 years. Also of their son and only child Mr Benjamin James of Roehampton in Surrey gentleman but formerly of this parish and of his wife Mrs Elizabeth James late of Peckham in Surrey. He died 20th January 1773 aged 71 years. She died 22nd December 1783 aged 70 years. Also John James esq., (who is interred on the opposite side of this tomb) and of his wife Mrs Susanna James. He died 21st September 1830 aged 91 years. She died 28th November 1774 aged 28 years. Underneath this tomb in the vault of the family of Mr Benjamin James formerly resident of this parish and wherein are interred the undermentioned bodies.
16. Benjamin James who died October 1749 aged 13 years. Edward Walter James died August 1741 aged 9 months. Thomas Edward James died March 1752 aged 6 years, The three sons of Benjamin and Elizabeth James and also the body of Benjamin James who died 24th January 1774 aged 8 months. The son of John and Susanna James and also the body of Anne Elizabeth James who died the 3rd August 1776 aged 4 months. The daughter of the Rev. William and Anne James. In a stone vault on this side and hereunder are interred the bodies of the Rev. William James rector of Ash near Farningham, Kent, who died 3rd of December 1779 aged 37 years the youngest son of the late Benjamin James of Roehampton in Surrey. Also Joseph James who died 14th September 1799 aged 29 years. Also Mrs Hester Morton of Peckham in Surrey died March 1793. This tomb was erected in the year 1780 by John James the only surviving son of Benjamin and Elizabeth James. In memory of his ancestors and of his own family.
17. Here lies the body of Mary wife of Thomas Whitfield who died October ye 14th 1746 aged 53 years. She was the dear companion of my youth Pattern of Vertue chastity and truth. Also the second wife of Thomas Whitfield who died April 16th 1754. A faithful just beloved wife Lies here bereaved of mortal life.
Also lies the body of Thomas Whitfield born at Muchewoolton, Lancashire, on the 20th day of May 1691. He died December 26th 1777. He was chose parish clerk of this parish in May 1720. Here lies the body of Thomas Whitfield son of Thomas and Hannah Whitfield who died 18th of April 1767 aged 12 years. He was dearly beloved of his father Tender and dear in the sight of his mother. Also the above Hannah Whitfield third wife of Thomas Whitfield died 18th October 1790 aged 76 years.

In memory of Mrs Ann Copeland wife of Mr John Copeland junior of St Saviour's Southwark died 16th of October 1719 aged 28 years. Also two children, John and Ede who both died under the age of a month.

20a. Here lyeth interred ye body of Abraham Sherman Mr of Artes late minister of God's word in this parish of Lee. He rebuilt new from ye ground ye psonedg house of this parish in the year of our Lord God 1636. He departed this life on ye 5th day of October 1654. Resurgam. In the church.

24. A memorial with coat of arms. [a drawing] To the memory of Sir John Call Br / of Whiteford in the county of Cornwall / F.R.S. and F.A.S. / High Sheriff of Cornwall in 1771. Unanimously elected member of Parliament for Callington in 1784, 1790 and 1796. Died March 7th 1801 at his mansion house Old Burlington Street, London. He was buried at Lee in Kent the 14th of March aforesaid aged 69. So just the skies - his heart so pure That or succeeding scenes have palms to give Or neer had he been born - young. He united in his character ll the virtues that adorn the Christian believer and dignify the man a real philanthropist without ostentation. Humble in his opinion of himself and charitable with respect to others meek and mild in his intercourse as a friend and master affectionate as a husband and father. Endowed with a warmth of feeling corrected by the most steady principles which enabled him to support without a murmur total blindness. His life was a pattern of purity of which his demise was the image, passing through the gates of death during his sleep. His afflicted family must ever deplore his loss, and whilst they cherish a lively remembrance of his virtues and a wish to follow his bright example, humbly hope to rejoin him in a blessed immortality.
25. Within this vault are deposited the remains of John Battie Call eldest son of Sir John Call of Whiteford in the county of Cornwall baronet and Philadelphia his wife. Cut off in the bloom of life after a short illness on the second day of November 1794. (The eve of completing his 17th year) at his father's seat in this parish. He was buried 10th November 1794. Soon not surprising death his visit paid Fortune with youth and gaiety conspired To weave a triple wreath of happiness If happiness on each to crown his brow And could death charge through such a shining shield.

27. M.S. Here lieth the body of Mrs Jane Allen late wife of Mr Thomas Allen, citizen of London. Using the means of health she found her grave by falling from her horse. June 24th and deceased ye 29th 1722 aged 31 years. Also four children; Mary, James, and Thomas who dyed young. Also a third Jane aged 3 years and 3 months. Deceased the 10th of January 1724. Here lyeth the body of Miss Lydia Allen who left this world November 17th 1740 aged 21 and was daughter to Mr Thomas Allen of Peckham whose body is interred here he quited this stage January 4th 1741 aged 88. As also the body of Edward Barnard, merchant of London, his son in law who died August 7th 1760 in the 51st year of his age.
28. Here lieth the body of Mr Thomas Allen, senior, late of Wing in the county of Bucks. he deceased October 15th 1724 aged 72 years.
28b. Also the body of Elizabeth wife of Mr Edward Barnard of Ave Maria Lane, London, who died the 30th of August 1778 aged 42 years. Within this tomb lies interred the body of Thomas Allen Barnard late of Hatton Garden son of Edward and Ann Barnard he departed this life August 24th 1778 in the 51st year of his life. Also Mrs Ann Barnard the wife of the above Edward Barnard obiit May 5th 1761 aetat 47.

[a drawing] Here lies the body of Mrs Jane Bythesea relict of John Bythesea esq. of Wickhouse, near Trowbridge in the county of Wilts many years in the commission of the Peace for the said county. She died at Blackheath the 17th November 1782 in the 75th year of her age. Here also lieth the body of Catherine Bythesea of Crooms Hill, Greenwich, granddaughter of the above who died 21st July 1780 in the 15th year of her age. 33. To the memory of Thomas Boone esq formerly of Lee Place in this county and parish who died on 28th December 1748 aged 62 years. This tomb is erected. Within this vault is deposited all that remains of a once amiable and most promising boy Charles the only son of Charles Boone esq and Harriet his wife who died of a fever on the 10th of November 1786 in the thirteenth year of his age. Also Elizabeth Boone daughter of the above who died 3rd of April 1799 aged 28 years. Within lie the remains of Charles Boone esquire who departed this life 3rd of March 1819 in the 90th year of his age. A man of the strictest integrity and honour, charitable benevolent and just, a most affectionate husband, an excellent kind and indulgent parent, a warm and sincere friend. Here lie interred the remains of Harriet Boone the wife of Charles Boone esq who died the 12th day of September 1811 in the 69th year of her age.

Here is also interred Mrs Margaret Halley the eldest daughter of the above Dr Halley she died on the 13 of October 1743 in the 55th year of her age. Also Mrs Catherine Price youngest daughter of the above Dr Halley who died November the 10th 1765 aged 77 years and Mr Henry Price her husband.
38. Under this tombe lyes the bodyes of Thomas Foxal and Elizabeth his wife he was sometime citizen and grocer of London and dyed ? day of December 1647 being aged ? yeares. She was the second daughter of Sir William Garroway of London merchant and dyed the 23rd day of June 1650 being aged ? yeares. They had issue two sons and daughters whereof are living Elizabeth, Margaret, Katherine, Mary and Martha. Come gentle reader you shall know what is Beneath this stone here's nature's rarities Grand parents joy the angel's charge to keepe In a cold bed of clay prepared by death Till God restore to him an heavenly breath Not ten yeares old (so young he was) and yet Few did excell him in his grace and witt Pregnant in learning memory retent So docile that few so excellent Should I say all was truly good in him I should come short in Lymming forth this stemme Nor would this stone conteyn't thereofre no more So greene a roote more ripen'd fruit nere bore Now if you'd know who tis deserves this praise Reade the next line and's name and virtues raise.

Here lyes the eldest sonne of Katherine ye wife of William Garnet of London, gentleman, one of the daughters of Thomas Foxall by Elizabeth his wife late of this parish he departed this life the ..... day of December 1648 being not full ten yeares of age and his grandmother Elizabeth before named in her love to him and for the imitation of his vertues by others caused this inscription.

Here lies interred the body of Mrs Susannah Bellamy wife of Clement Bellamy of London merchant who departed this life November 17th 1726 aetatis 26 as also of Mrs Mary Bellamy his second wife obiit 13th March 1744 aged 41 yeares. Also her two sons and one daughter. Also here lies the body of Mrs Sarah Stafford wife of Edward Stafford of Gosport in the county of Hants., gent. mother of the above said Mary Bellamy obiit 22ud April 1745 aged 80 years. As also the body of Mr Clement Bellamy husband to the above Susannah and Mary Bellamy who departed this life the 21st June 1748 aged 52 years. And likewise the body of Mr Edward Stafford who died March 17th 1763 aged 65 years. Also the body of Mrs Mary James wife of Mr William James of London banker daughter of the above said Clement and Mary Bellamy obiit March 5th 1773 aged 36 years.
41. Also the body of Mr Clement Bellamy son of the above said Clement and Mary Bellamy who died May 27th aged 72 years. Also William James esq (one of the fellows of the Royal and Antiquarian Societies and formerly a banker in Lombard Street) who died December 12th 1786 in the 67th year of his age. Also the body of Helen Macklay spinster their eldest daughter who died April the second 1792 aged 53. Also of Mrs Ann Ansell daughter of the above and wife of Mr John Ansell of Abingdon Street, Westminster, who died the 25th June 1798 aged 55. Also five of their infant children. 44. Samuel Bulman of St Mary Magdalen, Bermondsey, died June 23rd 1755. Abigail Bulman daughter of the above died June 23rd 1756. Christebel Bulman daughter of the above died June 1st 1765. Mary Bulman died November 28th 1775 aged 75 years.

[a drawing] Here lyeth buryed the body of Bryan Auslye esquier late of Lee in the county of Kent and Awdry his wife the only daughter of Robert Tirrel of Burbrooke in ye county of Essex esquier he had issue by her one sonne and three daughters Bryan who died without issue Grace married to Sir John Willgoose knight Christian married to the Lord Sands and Cordell married to Sir William Hervy knight ye said Bryan the father died on the 10th day of July 1604 he served Queene Elizabeth as one of the bank of gentlemen pensioners to her Majesty the space of XXX yeares the said Awdry died on the 25th of November 1591 Cordell the youngest daughter at her owne proper cost and charges in further testimonie of her dutifull love unto her father and mother caused this monument to be erected for the perpetual memorie of their names. Also Mrs Agnes Snow daughter of the above Richardson and Mary Hide who died 19th November 1783 aged 72. Also Mrs Elizabeth Jump daughter of the above Mrs Agnes Snow died 26th July 1789 aged 55. 61. An altar tomb with coat of arms. Sacred to the memory of Ann the wife of Thomas Lucas of London, merchant. She beloved of her family. To her sex an ornament and an honour, one who had the goodness of heart to add to all ye delicate accomplishments of ye female mind. A truly Christian character she departed this life in childbed 11th February 1756 in the thirty sixth year of her age. In her maternal embraces are deposited the remains of Anna Maria the infant daughter of the said Thomas and Ann Lucas who died on ye 6th day after her nativity they were lovely in their lives and in their deaths they were not divided.
62. The second wife of Thomas Lucas after nineteen years of mutual endearment which death alone could dissolve was translated to her native skies on the 30th day of December in the year 1776 the 43rd year of her age.
63. An altar tomb. Thomas Lucas Wheeler, Captain in the 100th Regiment of Foot, after a series of honourable services and sufferings in the East Indies departed this life on the 14th June 1792 aged 35. Thomas Lucas of this village genuine in his piety warm in his friendship unlimited in his benevolence adorned a public character and splendid fortune with the duties proper to his state and passed to the perfected society of virtuous minds by a departure instantaneous as translation on the 29th September 1784 aged 64.

Also near this place the remains of their children. Mary Dean widow of this parish who died 23rd June 1740 aged 36 years. John Butler of Dagenham, Essex, farmer, who died 21st October 1751 aged 42 years. James Butler of this parish, farmer, who died 19th April 1762 aged 44 years. William Butler of London, merchant, who died 17th July 1767 aged 57 years. George Butler of Downe in Kent, gentleman, who died 10 June 1783 aged 63 years and Matthew Butler of this parish who died 6th October 1784 aged 70 years.

Also the body of Mrs Joan Coles wife of Mr Nicholas Coles and mother of the above Mr Charles Chown she departed this life the 4th day of December 1778 aged 76 years. Also the body of Mr Charles Chown late of the parish of Greenwich and husband of the above Mary Chown who departed this life the 13th of January 1783 aged 48 years. Also Ann Chown second wife of Charles Chown who died the 19th October 1784 aged 47. Also Mr Nicholas Coles who died 30th of August 1786 aged 74 years.

In this vault are deposited the remains of Mrs Jane Woan wife of Mr John Woan, surgeon, late of the parish of St Marylebone, London, daughter of the above Mr Nicholas Coles and sister to Mrs Susanna Tomlinson who lies in the adjoining vault died the 2nd of October 1799 aged 57 years. Also Charles Henry Woan 24th May 1785 20 months, Edmund John Woan 6th March 1798 16 years; sons of the above.

Here lyeth interred the body of Mr Joseph Garland junior of ye Parish of Lewisham in the county of Kent, fellmonger, who departed this life January ye 12th 1746 in ye 62nd year of his age. [a drawing] In memory of John Charnock esquire Only son and heir apparent of John Charnock esq a native of the Island of Barbadoes and sometime a barrister of the Inner Temple by Frances only sister and heir to Robert Boothby esq and heir general of the family of Boothby, Baronets Long seated at Friday Hall in the parish of Chingford in Essex. He died on the sixteenth of May 1807 in the fifty first year of his age.
75. Mrs Elizabeth Rayley wife of Richard Rayley esq and only child of Richard Walker esq died 15th October 1773 in the 49th year of her age. Richard Rayley esq of Peckham in Surrey 4th son of Augustine Rayley esq of Horstead in Norfolk died 24th December 1797 in the 76th year of his age. Charles Petley Ragley esq eldest son of Richard Ragley esq and Elizabeth his wife died 5th December 1785 in the 34th year of his age. Mrs Ann Ragley widow of the above and only child of Thomas Morse esq of Norwich died 8th February 1814 in the 60th year of her age.
76. Richard Walker esq of Peckham in Surrey died 20th November 1739 in the 55th year of her [sic] age. Mrs Elizabeth Walker widow of the above and heiress of James Petley esq of Shoreham in Kent died 2nd March 1740 aged 48 years. Samuel Ragley esq second son of Richard Ragley esq and Elizabeth his wife died 24th October 1811 in the 54th year of his age.
