#FindsFriday: Percy Paine collection modelling
Something a little different for #FindsFriday!
We recently received a donation of archaeological archives from the Kent Archaeological Rescue Unit in which was included the collection of Percy Payne. Percy was connected with the Lower Medway Archaeological Group and an avid beachcomber around the Cliffe area of the North Kent Marshes.
He recovered a number of 2nd - 3rd century "Upchurch" ware vessels, more commonly described as Black Burnished Ware 2. Production of these vessels appears not to start before c. AD 120 with a known kiln being recorded at Cooling and a separate fabric known from Cliffe (although no definitive Kiln sites are known).
These three pots and two dishes plus a shell-tempered beaker are now on display in the KAS library. Members are welcome to book an appointment with the society archivist to use the library resources by emailing craig.campbell@kentarchaeology.org.uk.
The library will be open to the public on Saturday 12th April when we join Maidstone Museum for their local history fair, so do join us then to see these pots in person.
If you can't wait why not check out the pots on our website as our digital manager Jacob has been busy carrying out photogrammetry of them and other items in our collections: www.kentarchaeology.org.uk/models/upchurch-marshes-ceramics
Questions about our collections should be directed to our curator Andy using andy.ward@kentarchaeology.org.uk
