The next talk hosted by the Smarden Local History Society “How did it come to this?” is on Thursday April 17th when I will be talking about William Turner’s glorious masterpiece depicting HMS Temeraire, veteran of The Battle of Trafalgar, being towed to the breaker’s yard.
I’ll be exploring why the painting and the old battleship itself, stirred such emotion at the time, and why the order Nelson gave to the Temeraire as the battle began probably cost him his life.
We hope you will join us at the usual time of 6:45 pm at The Charter Hall. The talk will start at 7:30 pm and guests are, as always, very welcome.
