Kent Archives Office Major Accessions 1981-83 Yates

KENT ARCHIVES OFFICE: MAJOR ACCESSIONS, 1981-83 NIGEL YATES Between 1954 and 1968 it was customary to publish in Archaeologia Cantiana summary lists of the major accessions in the Kent Archives Office. This practice has been abandoned as the function of the lists had to some extent been superseded by the full Guide to the holdings of the office, published in 1958, and its two supplements, published in 1971 and 1983, respectively. The Guide and its supplements contain details of all records acquired by the office since its establishment in 1933 to 31 December, 1980. It has, however, been decided not to continue the practice of publishing substantial supplements to the Guide. The main reasons for taking this decision are the long delays between the acquisition of the records and the appearance of a description of them in a publicly available format, together with the high cost of publishing information about records by the guide method. Instead it has been decided to revert to the earlier practice of publishing information about the record acquisitions of the Kent Archives Office through annual lists in Archaeologia Cantiana, and to offprint copies of future lists for the benefit of non-members of the Kent Archaeological Society. The publication of these annual lists will be grant-aided by the Kent Archives Office, and the County Archivist is most grateful to the Society's Hon. Editor and Publications Committee for agreeing to this arrangement. The list of accessions in the current volume covers all those records acquired through transfer, gift, bequest, deposit or purchase between 1 January, 1981 and 31 December, 1983. Some records of minor importance or collections which remain substantially uncatalogued have been excluded from the list, which covers accessions not only in the main Kent Archives Office at County Hall, Maidstone, but also those at its branch offices in Folkestone and Ramsgate. 313 N.
