Shorne Woods Archaeology Group update
Silence of the Sentinels update
The work forming part of the Silence of the Sentinels Project continues with Richard Taylor and John Townsend of Shorne Woods Archaeology Group carrying out Magnetometry and Resistivity at the Goldsborough Signal Station site.
A brief description of the images below:
1 - An overview of the signal station's plan overlaid with JT's resistivity results. The orange areas are confirmed, while the grey areas are predicted.
2 - Same overview overlaying LiDAR data.
3 - Same overview overlaying Mag data.
The mag survey appears to have provided a more precise outline of the inner structures. The resistivity data has detected the outer ditch to the north, but it seems to be backfilled with debris from demolition. There is no evidence of the outer ditch in the magnetic results to the south, likely because it is well buried and obscured by the ridge and furrow ploughing above.
4 - Overview of the mag results.
5 - Mag results overlaying LiDAR data...ridge & furrow plough marks match perfectly!
6 - Fully annotated mag results and additional survey finds.
7- Overview of potential features that require further assessment.
8 - Location of earthwork bank to the east of signal station...excavation target for April/May.
9 - Location of earthwork platform and possible intact aqueduct/wall...excavation target for April/May.
10 - Location of earthwork/platform in adjoining field to east seen on aerials and LiDAR...possible survey target in future.
The KAS are now in discussions with the landowners and Historic England regarding our future plans for the site and the work we can undertake there. Our curator Andy is also looking to visit Whitby Museum where finds from the original 1918 can be found.
The work for the Silence of the Sentinels Project has been undertaken thanks to generous funding from The Pharos Foundation (https://pharos.foundation/). The Foundation have been extremely supportive of the Society's plans for the project and we look forward to sharing more in due course.
