Inscriptions in the Churchyard
570. On the North side of the churchyard is a large Altar Tomb probably of the 17th Century but no inscription remains.

571. James BRISSENDEN died 7 June 1819 aged 32. Left issue by Jane his wife 2 sons and one daughter: James, Mary and William.

572. (East End). Francis AUSTEN died 3 November 1839 aged 72. James Austen his nephew died 20 May 1820 aged 21. Elizabeth JORDEN neice of the above died 7 February 1824 aged 28.
In the South Eastern part573. Henry BRIGNALL of Broomhill died 15 January 1850 aged 80. Salutha his wife 22 June 1829 aged 60. Henry their infant son died 31 March 1809 aged 1 year 6 months. They left issue surviving one son and 2 daughters: John, Ann and Elizabeth. John Brignall died 7 January 1855 aged 59.

574. An old altar tomb, low. No inscription now visible. Probably early 18th Century.

575. James HAYWARD died 15 December 1815 aged 40.

576. Rebecca wife of James HAYWARD died 31 July 1842 aged 51.

577. William HAYWARD died … June 1803 aged 79. Also Elizabeth Bodel Hayward his wife … November ? 1802 aged 77. Likewise John their son 5 November 1802 aged ?17. Left surviving Elizabeth, William, …..

578. William HAYWARD died 26 January 1837 aged 83. Elizabeth his wife 9 May 1842 aged 78. They had Issue 5 sons and 4 daughters: Mary, William, Elizabeth, Ann, Skeere, John, Charles, Jane and James.

579. Skeere HAYWARD died … March 1820 aged 2(?4).

580. Elizabeth wife of John MILLS and daughter of Robert and Jane HOAR died 18 July 1763 aged 27. Also John Mills son of above John and Elizabeth Mills died 6 October 1767 aged 7 years.

581. Robert HOARE died 9 August 1762 aged 59. Also [?Ann] his wife died (?3) April 1783 aged 77. Issue 5 daughters: Elizabeth, Mary, Jane, Ann and Susanna.

582. Peter son of Jonathon and Ann HARESFIELD died (?10) March 1805 aged 8 years.

583. James son of James and Mary DOWLE died 1801 aged 10 weeks.

584. James DOWLE died … July 1780 aged (?3, 8 or 5)9. Left surviving by Ann his first wife John and (?Jane) and by his second wife James and (?Ann).

585. Ann HEARSFIELD, late of Brookland, died 24 April 1834 aged 80. Left surviving 2 sons and 2 daughters.

586. Elizabeth wife of Thomas SECKER died 25 October 1781 aged 31. Also Thomas Secker 13 July 1789 aged 43.

587. William BEEVE died 29 June 1829 aged 78. Elizabeth his wife 20 June 1788 aged 33. Had issue 2 sons and 2 daughters: William, James, Elizabeth and Ann. Elizabeth died 9 October 1794 aged 13; James 17 January 1795 aged 10; William was buried at Snargate 29 November 1819 aged 40. Ann their surviving daughter erected this stone.

588. Elizabeth Beeve HIDER daughter of William Beeve and Harriet Hider of Fairfield died 6 June 1825 aged 16 months.

591. Ellen wife of Clifton SIMMONS of this Parish 25 January 1852 aged 21.

592. William HEARSFIELD of this Parish, Yeoman, died 16 January 1853 aged 67. Elizabeth his wife who lies interred in the adjoining cemetery. Mary Ann daughter of above died 14 November 1808 aged 15 months. Eliza daughter of above died in February 1827 aged 17. Left surviving 2 sons John Thomas and William.

593. John HEARSFIELD died 20 July 1796 aged 58.

594. Elizabeth HEARSFIELD wife of the late Thomas Hearsfield of this Parish, yeoman deceased and daughter Of the late Pet….. W…… of Beckley, Sussex ………..……………. (under grass ?mid 18th Century).

595. (Large Altar Tomb in rails). Top: In a vault beneath this Tomb | lie the remains of | John ……….. |son of John and Ann MUNN who | died M………. 17…. Aged …. Years | a long inscription not readable from the position.
[South side]: On the South side of this Tomb are interred 3 sons and 3 Daughters of John and Mary Munn. Elizabeth Munn born …. 176-.. died December 177-: Mary Munn born ….. 1767 died February 1767. Henry Munn born February 1768 died February 1768.
[North side]: Benjamin Munn born ….. 1760 died February 2(?6) 1771: Martha Anna Munn born 17 June 1770 died 6 June 1771: Read Munn born 27 June 1781 died 20 October 1781. [see No. 702].

596. (Altar Tomb: top left hand corner broken). …..re lieth interr’d ye Body of …..n wife of Henry READ Junior …….o departed this life February ye 14th 1753 aged 31 years. Left issue three children viz: Ann, Henry and John. Also Ann his sister who died 12 July 1754 aged 51 years. Also John his son who died 18 August 17(?54) aged two years. Here lieth interr’d the body of Henry his son who departed this life June ye 26, 17(?75) aged (?24) years. Likewise in memory of Henry Read of this Parish, Esq., who died December 20 1777 aged (?5)7 years.

597. (Altar). Here lieth interr’d the Bodies of Henry READ and Jane his wife. She died May ye 10th 1740 aged 57. He died May the 10th 1754 aged 70.

598. Mary, daughter of Henry and Jane READ died 13 January 1738 aged 2 years.

599. Jane, daughter of Henry and Jane READ died 7 September 1735 aged 20.

600. Elizabeth wife of John MUNN, daughter of Henry and Jane Read died March ye 10, 1740 (was 1730) aged 26.
(Note: These three last stones are very beautifully cut).  (From Mike Cozens 2002-09-27  Elizabeth Munn's will dated 16/2/1739/40, probate date 15/4/1740 names Henry Read senior as her beloved father and John her son and John Munn her deceased husband)

602. John SKEERE of this Parish died 10 January 1852 aged 51. Jemima his wife died 15 February 1836 aged 36. Harriet their daughter died in infancy 1825. Elizabeth their daughter 23 December 1829 aged 8 years. Left surviving 1 daughter: Ann.

603. William CO )IT of this Parish died 7 October 1767 aged 3(?0). Elizabeth his wife 8 June 17(?63) aged (?37).

608. Sarah wife of Thomas BURR died 2 April 1752 aged 67. Left issue one daughter Mary Barling.

609. Isaac BARLING of this Parish, Grazier, died 2 June 1791 aged 63. David Barling and Elizabeth his wife. He died 16 August 1786 aged 61. She died 21 December 1789 aged 59. Left issue 2 sons William and David by whom this stone is erected.

610. Mary wife of William FARNELL of this Parish died 28 January 1773 aged 70. Her surviving husband caused this stone to be erected.

611. Elizabeth, wife of David BARLING died 27 April 1802 aged 43. Mary his daughter died in infancy. She left surviving Ann, Isaac, Dorothy, David, Charles and William.

612. David BARLING, late Brewer of Lydd, died 29 October 1810 aged 49. Left surviving 4 sons and 2 daughters: Ann, Isaac, Dorothy, David, Charles and William.

613. Ann wife of William BARLING, Grazier, of this Parish died 6 September 1809 aged 55.

614. William BARLING, Grazier of this parish, died 7 April 1812 aged 55.

Also Ann his 2nd wife who died 17 September 1798 aged 64 by whom he had issue 3 daughters: Ann, Mary and Elisabeth. Ann died in her infancy, Mary and Elisabeth are still surviving.

618. William GRIST died 5 April 1843 aged 55. Had issue by Mary his wife 12 children: William, John; Ann; Elizabeth; Mary died 25 November 1825 aged 12; Thomas died 1 January 1809 aged 2 weeks; Charles is buried near; George; Thomas Giles; Susanna; James died 30 August 1829 aged 9 weeks; Henry. Also Mary his wife who died 7 October 1861 age 73.

619. Charles GRIST, Veterinary Surgeon son of William and Mary Grist died 20 June 1845 aged 25.

622. Nehemiah BAYDEN of ys Parish died 15 April 1776 aged 64. Nehemiah Bayden son of Thomas Bayden of Rochester died August ye 20, 1762 aged 11 years.

625. Elizabeth wife of John TERRY died 5 September 1795 aged (?53). John Terry died 13 April 1800 aged 53.

626. (This and the 4 following are in an enclosure). John GRIST, Grazier, died 6 October 1834 aged 77. Left surviving by Susanna his wife 4 sons and 1 daughter: John, William, Ann, Thomas and Giles. Susanna Grist his wife died 27 May 1830 aged 87 (clearly written by L.L.D.).

627. Thomas GRIST, Grazier, died 8 July 1803 aged 52. He left one daughter by Mary his 2nd wife viz: Frances. This stone is erected by Mary Grist his surviving wife. Near lie the remains of Mary Grist his first wife who died 25 July 1778 aged 31. Also Mary daughter of the above Thomas and Mary Grist who died 17 February 1799 aged 25.

628. Mary wife of T. GRIST, Grazier, died 3 March 1815 aged 71. Frances only daughter of Thomas and Mary Grist of this Parish died 30 March 1807 aged 28.

629. (Low tomb). Giles William GRIST son of John and Mary Grist died 11 July 185(?3) aged 7 months.

630. Phobe wife of Giles GRIST 17 September 1827 aged 27. Above Giles Grist 21 December 1857 aged 63.

631. John ROBINSON of this Parish died 28 November 1805 aged 46. Had issue by Martha his wife one son and one daughter: John and Hannah. Also Martha his wife died 4 January 1830 aged 75.

632. Peter WOODMAN died 5 November 1815 aged 59. Had issue by Mary his wife 7 children: Ann died an infant 3 December 1786. John died an infant 10 July 1787. Also Sarah died January 179- aged 2 years.
South West part of the Yard633. John RANSOM died 11 July 1852 aged 81. Ann his wife 9 December 1809 aged 31. Elizabeth his 2nd wife 23 October 1844 aged 55.

634. William NYE of this Parish died 29 January 1805 aged 23. He had while on earth a friend who as a Testimony of his regard caused this Stone with the following inscription to be erected (Here follow eight lines of verse).

635. Martha TERRY wife of Stephen Terry died 25 January 1775 aged 65.

636. Stephen TERRY died March ye 27, 1762 aged 57. Martha daughter of Stephen Terry and Martha his wife December ye 15, 1757 aged 7 years.

637. Here lie 3 children of Stephen TERRY’s by Martha his wife. Henry died 6 May 1745 aged 9 months. Thomas 3 July 1749 aged 3 years. Elizabeth died …… 1751 ………..

638. John TERRY died 31 March 1766 aged 49. Sarah his wife 19 May 1761 aged 36, by whom he had 7 children: Mary, John, Sarah, Elizabeth, Henry, Stephen and Elizabeth. Elizabeth and Stephen lie near this place. He left issue by Sarah his 2nd wife one son: William. She caused this stone to be erected.

639. Elizabeth wife of William GRIST died 6 August 1837 aged 72. William Grist 2 May 1840 aged 81.

640. Mary wife of James TERRY died December ye 20, 1770 aged 38. Left issue James and Elizabeth.

641. James TERRY late of Parish of Brenzett, Gentleman, died 28 February 1809 aged 73. Left issue by his first wife one daughter: Elizabeth, and by his surviving widow 5 sons and 3 daughters: Henry, Edward, John, William, Charlotte, Mary, Stephen and Martha.

642. Stephen TERRY son of James Terry and Elizabeth his wife died ye 5th March 1782 aged 2 years 8 months. (On back). Thomas son of James and Elizabeth Terry died 12 June 1795 aged 14 weeks.

643. Sarah wife of Stephen TERRY died October ye 2, 1708 aged 33 years. She left issue by him three sons: Thomas, Henry and Stephen. Here also lieth Stephen Terry died 12 July 1728 aged 63.

644. Henry TERRY died 22 November 1752 aged 53. Elizabeth his wife 27 February 1748 aged 36. They had issue 5 sons and 2 daughters: Henry and Thomas lie buried here. Mary, James, Sarah, John and Henry survive.

645. Mary TERRY daughter of Henry and Elizabeth Terry died 19 January 1757 aged 24.

646. (Stone with 2 cherubs faces in centre and "Glory be to God on high"). To ye memory of Joseph ILLENDEN of this Parish died December ye 28, 1759 aged 68. To ye memory of Sarah wife of Joseph Illenden of this Parish. She died August ye 7, 1739 aged 52.

647. John KNIGHT died 2 February 1789 aged 60. Martha his wife 7 August 1797 aged 72.

At West end of yard
648. Ann wife of Edward BARKER died 8 January 1838 in 59th year. Left issue one son: Edward.

649. Ann BAKER died 21 October 1830 aged 5½ years. George Baker died 7 March 1852 aged 13.

650. Charles BAKER died 13 July 1854 aged 23.

Also the under mentioned children: George died 2 March 1846 aged 6 years 10 months; Eliza 11 March 1860 aged 27; Frances 28 November 1863 aged 19 interred in Bow Cemetery, London; Mercy died in Barming Heath Asylum 11 September 1871 aged 36; Esther died at Bolton July 1873 aged 44.

697. On North wall of North Chancel a tablet: To the memory of Thomas BAYDEN of Brookland eldest son of the late Thomas Bayden Esq., of Brookland and Hythe in Kent died 13 April 1903 aged 53. Erected by his wife.

698. (Altar Tomb). Here lyeth buried the bodie of John PLOMER sonne of Thomas Plomer bothe Jurats of the Towne and Porte of New Romnye who had to wyfe Rebecca the daughter of William JENKINE late ivrat of Foulstone by whome he had issue XI children seaven alive at ye time of his death 4 sonnes and 3 daughters, sonnes William, John, Thomas and Samuell, daughters Rebecca, Joane and Katherine departed this life the 12 day of October 1615 being of the age of 48 yeare. Having been three times Mayor of the same Towne and Captaine of the Selecte Bond sometime Burges at the Parliament for the same towne who was one of the Portes Barons in carying ther Canopie at the Coronation of James the first of England.

699 (Flat stone) In memory of Thomas BAYDEN of this Parish, Grazier, who died 24 June 1816 age 58 years. Also Mary widow of the above who died 18 October 1837 aged 81 years [16 lines of verse]

700 (Flat stone) Here lyeth the Body of Alice MARSH of Brookland in the County of Kent who did depart this Present life the ninth December 1650 aged 7(2 or 9) years. Epithath Grieve not when friendes and ….. folke die they gaine by Death Eter…….. Alice Marsh

701 (Flat stone) Here lyeth the Bodie of Nicholas MARSH who died the 3rd day of March 16{3 or 7} (?7) aged ?45 years.

702. [Mural South Chancel] In a vault on the south side of this church are deposited the remains of John MUNN, Gent, of this Parish who died 23 July 1813 aged 75 and of Mary his widow who died 6 January 1827 aged 89. Also 6 sons and 4 daughters of John and Mary Munn: Mary died 25 February 1767 aged 1 month;  Henry died 25 February 1768 aged 12 days; Benjamin died 20 February 1771 aged 2 years; Martha Anne died 6 June 1771 aged 11 months; Elizabeth died 12 December 1776 aged 11 years; Read died 20 October 1781 aged 3 months; Mary died 6 June 1788 aged 17 years; John died 31 August 1791 aged 27 years; William died 30 August 1793 aged 20 years; Thomas died 3 April 1798 aged 19 years. This tablet is erected by Henry only surviving son of John and Mary Munn as a tribute of sincere respect [see No. 595 which this helps to explain].

703. (Mural. South Chancel). Sacred to the memory of George SNOAD, Captain of His Majesty’s 19th Lancers, who departed this life 23 January 1829 aged 42. Also his wife Susannah PHILLIPS who died 5 April 1876 widow of William Phillips Es q.

704. (Flat stone). Here lieth Interr’d the Body of Thomas BURR of this Parish who departed this life August the 22nd 1760 aged 59 years.

705. (A large monument on wall of South Aisle). Sacred to the memory of Henry READ late of this Parish Esq., who died 29 December 1777 aged 57. Also of Ann his wife who died 14 February 1753 aged 31. Likewise of John their youngest son who died 28 August 1754 aged 2 years. And also of Henry Read Esq., their eldest son who died 26 June 1775 aged 24. Shield of Arms: Azure on a bend wavy argt. between two fish palewise of the last 3 cornish choughs: Impailing gules a chevron ermine between 3 goats heads erased arg. Crest a duck (?) paly arg and az beaked and legged or holding in her beak a (?fish).

706. (Mural South wall). Sacred to the memory of Nehemiah BAYDEN of this Parish, Grazier, who died 14 August 1847 aged 68. Also Mary SIMMONDS sister of above and relict of Stephen Simmonds of Canterbury who died 3 July 1840 aged 59.

707. (Ditto). In affectionate remembrance of James BRIGNALL late of this Parish who died 11 December 1878 aged 61. Interred at Ivychurch with other members of his family. Erected by his widow 1881.

708. (Mural Western end of South wall). Sacred to the memory of Thomas BAYDEN late of the Parish of Brenzeth who departed this life 26 day of November 1844 in 62nd year. Left surviving by Mary his wife one son and two daughters: Thomas, Mary Ann and Susanna. Also of Emma daughter of above who died 24 August 1832 aged 18 days and of Maria who died 22 November 1838 aged 15 weeks. Also of Elizabeth who died 14 March 1838 aged 8 years 6 months and also of Mary widow of above died 10 October 185(5 or 3) aged 6(?8).
In the Nave
709. (Flat stone). To the memory of Captain George SNOAD of His Majesty’s 19th Lancers who died the 23rd day of January 1829 aged 42 years.

710. (Ditto). Here lieth the body of Gamaliel BRATTLE. He died October ye 20, 1750 aged 81. Here also lieth the body of Anne his wife. She died 22 November 1750 aged 80.

711. (Mural on South side of Nave arcade, Western end): Near this place in the sepulchre of his Ancestors lyes buried the body of Henry BARTON of Folkestone Gent., who died the 23rd of November 1725. He took to
wife, Frances ye daughter of Thomas KIRRILL of Hadlow, Gent., by whom he had issue one son and 3 daughters. She died the 5th day of June 1714 and at her own desire was buried with her own family at Hadlow. Two of their children are here Interr’d viz: Kirrill his only son who died the 25th day of May 1713 and Alice the second daughter who died the 18th day of April 1719. His two surviving daughters, Frances and Catherine, caused this monument to be erected in grateful memory of their father.
