The Monumental Inscriptions in Folkestone Church

The Monumental Inscriptions in Folkestone Church, with notes from Parish Registers. Noted by Leland L. Duncan  Noted 5th October 1891. Also some Monumental Inscriptions  Noted by Rev Bryan Faussett noted 1759, added 20th April 2008.

The following is as far as possible an exact transcription of Mr L.L. Duncan's field notebook for the M.I.s in the Folkestone area where he seems have stayed during September and October 1891.  His notebook written up in his shorthand, in pencil, on the site leaves something to be desired. The paper of the notebook has over time become somewhat dirty and aged but is an immensely valuable record of that date.

(Stahl. 284.5. This ring of 6 was recast the 1st time, ut seq. 1,2,4,5,7,8). Pack & Chapman, 1778; 3&6) T. MEARS, 1813. 2nd recast: all 8 by TAYLOR & CO. 1879).

81. On The North Side of the North Chancell stand the Walls of a ruinated Chapel (perhaps this was a Vestry) wch. had a Door into it from ye North Chancell and on the South Side of the Church are Ruins, which are now call’d the Old Priory (perhaps the Cloisters).

82. Eadbald, Son of Ethelbert (the 5th, and 1st Xtian King of Kent) erected a Nunnery here, at Folkestone, circa. A.D. 630. This was the 1st Nunnery erected in England – see Speed Fol.298.

83. In The Church Yard, is an Altar Tomb, for Robert HAMMOND Esq. 1722. Ann his Wife 1749. William his Son 1753, and 4 ancient ones not legible and Headstones in Memory of BAYLEY, BRUMLEY, BROWN, BAKER, BOXER, CLARK, CULLEN, CORNISH, COLLAR, CORNES, CASTLE, CHESMAN, EMPTAGE, FULLER, FEARNE GOODE, GODDEN, GITTINS, GILL, GREENLAND, HAMPTON, HAWKES, HUNT, HALL, HOLDSTOCK, JACOBS, JOHNCOCK, KENNET, KING, KELLEY, MANINGS, MILTON, MAJOR, MARSH, MINTER, MARTIN, NICHOLLS, OLDFEILD, POPE, POLHILL, PILCHER, PETTET, PENFEILD, PISING, RAMSEY, RUTTON, ROUTHAN, REEVE, ROGERS, SLADDEN, SANDFORD, SLATER, SMITH, STEVENSON, STRESWICK, SEERE, SPEARPOINT, SQUIRE, SMITHSON, STACE, VERRIER, WOOD, WATSON, WELLARD – with Many others not legible.

84. The Following Epitaph, for Rebecka the Wife of Thomas ROGERS, who died 22 Aug. 1688 I thought so odd, that I could not help transcribing it. An House she hath made of so good a Fashion,/ The Tenant ne’er shall pay for Reparation./ We will the Land Lord ever raise her Rent;/ Nor turn her out of Doors for Non Payment./ From Chimney Money too she’s always free./ To such an House who would not Tenant be.

85. This Church was dedicated to St. Mary and St. Eanswithe, and was founded by one Nigellus DE MUNVILLE, Lord of Folkestone, in ye Year 1095. It is a Curacy of the Arch Bishop’s. The present Curate is the Revd. Mr. LANGHORNE who is also Rector of Hakinge, adjacent. 1759.

86. There were anciently 4 other Churches in this Towne. The Names of 3 of them are still remembered – viz. St. Marie’s, St. Peter’s and St. Paul’s.

87. Roman Coins and Bricks have formerly been found here; but not of late as I cd. hear of, tho I made very strict Enquiry.

88. Bp. STILLINGFLEET, in his Orig. Britain; and SOMNER, in his Roman Ports and Forts, with some others, imagine this Place to have been the Lapis Tituli, of Mennius; and the Place where Vortimer fought his last Battle with the Saxons; ‘tho Others fix it at Stonar, in Thanet. See Harris’s Hist. of Kent. Fol.124.
