Monumental Inscriptions in the churchyard of Snargate Church

The Monumental Inscriptions in the churchyard of Snargate Church. Noted by Leland L. Duncan. Typed up by Dawn Weeks, checked by Zena Bamping.

In the churchyard – eastern portion
207. John BATES died 28 July 1863 aged 64. Had issue by Mary Ann his wife 7 sons and 5 daughters Nathan John, John, William, George died 1 June 1862 aged 28, Isaac died 16 January 1889 aged 53, Mary Ann died 5 March 1864 aged 26, Naomi Ruth, Orpah died 23 April 1887 aged 47, Samuel Rolfe, Charles, Elizabeth Esther, Annie Eliza.

208. Mary Ann wife of late John BATES of this parish died 5 January 1888 aged 82.

209. George BATES died 17 June 1862 aged 28.

210. Arthur Rolfe BATES of Brookland died suddenly 23 October 1907 aged 43.
South eastern portion
211. Charles Rolfe first born child of Edward William KINSON, Rector, and of Sarah Esther his wife born and died 16 September 1877.

212. John HOWLAND died 12 December 1890 aged 56.

213. Henry HOWLAND died 25 July 1868 aged 72. For 40 years parish clerk. Also Susan his wife died 30 March 1876 aged 75. Harriot died 8 January 1834 aged 3 months. Susanna died 3 July 1846 aged 9. Also Harriott wife of William GURR died 21 September 1875 aged 36. Daughters of the above.

214. Hannah wife of Stephen STREDWICK died 14 April 1852 aged 46. Stephen STREDWICK died 5 January 1860 aged 60. Stephen their son 6 December 1828 aged 1 month.

215. James HARRIS died 16 March 1873 aged 50. Left surviving his wife and 5 children. Sarah Bentley Harris wife of above died 24 January 1898 aged 81.

216. William STACE of this parish died 10 January 1851 aged 65. Elizabeth his wife 25 May 1826 aged 35.

217. Mary daughter of James and Sarah BOURNE of Ivychurch died 5 December 1790 aged 15 years.

218. William BOURNE son of James and Mary Bourne of this parish died 10 August 1803 aged 11 years.

219. Sarah BOURNE died 20 January 1810 aged 20 years.

220. Susannah BOURNE, died 12 August 1826 aged 26.

221. Elizabeth LAWS died 2 May 1840 aged 47. Also James BOURNE, father of the above died 19 April 1841 aged 85. Also Sarah his wife died 13 December 1849 aged 78.

222. John BOURNE died 7 May 1882 aged 76.

223. Anna wife of Thomas MEXSTED of this parish died 28 August 1774 aged 34. Thomas Mexsted died February ye 15, 1776 aged 40.

224. To the memory of two brothers. Here lieth the body of John Winder BOURNE who died May ……, 1779 aged 32. Here lieth William Bourne died 9 January 1799 aged 44. James Bourne their surviving brother caused this to be erected. Also Sarah wife of above William Bourne died 15 February 1833 aged 84.

225. Mary wife of John BOURNE of this parish died 30 September 1761 aged 39, by whom she had 5 children: John Winder, Henry, Mary, William, James. Henry died January 1748 aged 17 weeks. John Bourne died 7 April 1803 aged 84. He was many years resident in this parish and in the small circle of his acquaintance much respected.

226. Here lieth the body of John WINDER of this parish died 27 September 1757 aged 84. Mary his first wife by whom he had 3 daughters, two of which died young and Elizabeth the eldest was married to John BOURNE of Brenzet by whom she had 3 sons and one daughter. John the eldest and only one surviving caused this stone.

227. Elizabeth wife of John BOURNE of Brenzett died November ye (?5) 17(?4)7 aged –7. Here also lyeth the body of ………………. William Bourne………, …………… (decayed – an early stone).

228. Margaret widow of John BOURNE of Brenzett, eldest daughter of the Reverend John BUNCE MA Rector of Chingford and Pitsey died 20 October 1781 aged 73.

229. Mr John BOURNE late of Brenzett died 6 August 1762 aged 67. After having served the office of bailiff of Romney Marsh seven times. Had by Elizabeth his first wife 4 children 3 of which lie buried near and the other viz John Bourne surviveth. By Margaret his surviving widow he had 11 children 4 of which also lie buried near. The other 7: James, Mary, Margaret, Martha, Susannah, William and Sarah survive and caused this stone to be erected.

230. Susannah BOURNE died 3 January 1802 aged 62. Erected by her brother James Bourne.

231. James BOURNE of New Romney died 13 June 1810 aged (?81).

232. Mary wife of Richard JONES, Vicar of Brenzett and Curate of Woodchurch died 28 March 1787 in 55th year. She was eldest daughter of John BOURNE of Brenzett by Margaret his wife.

233. James BOURNE son of William and Elizabeth Bourne, died 3 May 1795 aged 22.

234. Elizabeth BOURNE late wife of William Bourne died 22 March 1772 aged 26. Left issue William and James.

235. Edward WOOD late of Brenzett died 5 September 1779 aged 50. Issue by Sarah his surviving widow 9 children, three lie near, the other survive: Sarah, Edward, Mary, Elizabeth, William and John.

236. Thomas APPS died 16 June 1755 aged 63. Sarah his wife 23 January 1770 aged 84. Left issue by Sarah his wife 5 children viz: William ……………. (under grass).

237. Felix KIETE died 26 May 1769 aged 32. Left issue by Mary his wife 4 sons: William, Thomas, Felix and John.

238. William WOOD late of Brenzett died 5 March 1814 aged 45.

239. William son of Edward and Margaret WOOD died 18 June 1808 aged (?4) years.

240. Edward WOOD of Brenzett, Grazier, died 22 November 1814 aged 57. Left by Margaret his wife one son: Edward.

241. Ann daughter of John and Margarett BUTLER of Ivychurch died 12 December 1838 in 50th year. Above Margarett died 21 March 1852 in her 92nd year.

242. Edward WOOD died 15 June 1870 aged 69. Had issue by Margaret his wife 5 sons and 3 daughters: William, Edward, Margaret Ann, John, Richard, Mary Ann, Theophilus died 6 March 1871 aged 33. Elizabeth died 16 July 1864 aged 24. Margaret wife of above Edward Wood died 13 October 1874 aged 76.

243. Elizabeth daughter of Edward and Margaret WOOD died 16 July 1864 aged 24.

244. William SMITH late of this parish died 19 February 1836 aged 87. Mary his wife died 17 June 1819 aged 66. Leaving issue 2 daughters: Sarah and Rebecca. They lived together in
wedlock 42 years.

249. Silvester wife of Thomas VENNALL died ye 11 June 1738 aged 47. She left by her husband PACH (?ARD) 2 sons: Edward and Thomas and by Thomas Vennall…..

251. William WILES late of this parish died 25 November 1892 aged 76. Mary his wife 28 July 1889 aged 67.

252. To my husband Fairhall BATES died 21 March 1895 aged 59.

253. John HICKMAN of this parish died 20 May 1890 in his 81st year. Sarah Hickman died 14 July 1888 aged 59.

254. Ann Susannah wife of John HICKMAN of this parish died 29 September 1848 aged 31, leaving 5 children: 
John  George, Stephen, Edward, Mary and Alfred.

259. George HICKMAN of this parish died 15 August 1847 aged 73. Mary his widow 10 April 1858 aged 76.

260. Benjamin COBB died 26 November 1880 aged 71. Ann his wife 3 January 1883 aged 75.

261. Alfred EDWARDS died 16 September 1857 aged 21.

262. Richard EDWARDS died 19 September 1879 aged 74. Mary Ann his wife 14 October 1885 aged 75. Issue 2 sons and 4 daughters.

263. To the children of James and Sarah SWADLING Mary Harriet died 23 February 1868 aged 14 months Esther February 10 1873 aged 3 years 7 months Matilda 6 March 1873 aged 3 weeks. Alice 15th March 1873 aged 1 year 11 months. These three last on their passage to Queensland. William Edward 27 January 1878 aged 1 month.

264. Stephen HICKMAN of Ivychurch 19 August 1908 aged 68. Eliza Hickman his wife 2 June 1896 aged 57. There are 2 other Hickman graves but though modern the inscriptions being painted have perished.

There are no inscriptions in the church except a modern brass and the War Memorial.
