Some Monumental Inscriptions of St Laurence Church, Bapchild

Some Monumental Inscriptions of St Laurence Church,  Noted by Pat & Paul Tritton in 2003.

1. Sarah daughter of C.WILDISH gent, late of Morris Court and wife of J LAKE of Radfield in this parish, died 26 January 1788 aged 26 years. Her her child an infant son died a short time before her. Ann the second wife of J. Lake and daughter of T.DENNE gent of Watmer Hall in this county died 11 November 1815 aged 45 years. Elizabeth her eldest daughter died 4 August 1811 aged 18 years, and 2 infants before that time. Surviving issue 3 sons and 4 daughters. Thomas Lake (of Rainham Parsonage) son of the above John and Ann Lake, who departed this life 31 July 1834 aged 32 (bottom of stone inscribed Blaxland Milton)

2. Here lieth the body of Anne widow of William LAKE late of Wood Street in this parish who departed this life 22 April 1844 aged 77 years

3. In this chancel lie interred the remains of Sarah died April 9 1798 aged 4 years. Eleanor died October 7 1808 aged 7 years. Emily died February 27 1812 aged 3 years. Martha died April 22 1817 aged 19 years. Children of William and Anne LAKE of Woodstreet in this parish

4. Sacred to the memory of Henry LAKE of 10 Lincolns Inn London. Fifth son of William and Ann Lake who died April 3 1863 aged 55 years and was buried in the cemetery at Highgate

5. Sacred to the memory of Robert LAKE. Third son of William and Ann Lake late of Woodstreet in this parish. He died 26 October 1875 aged 75 years and was buried at Milton in Canterbury

6. Sacred to the memory of Charles LAKE of Bargains Hill Rodmersham. Fourth son of William and Ann Lake late of Wood Street in this parish who died January 2 1867 aged 62 years and was buried at Rodmersham

On other walls of the chancel.
7. In this chancel lie the remains of Edward LAKE of Abbotts Court Hoo, youngest son of William Lake late of Woodstreet in this parish and of Anne his wife , who died 19 April 1845 aged 34. Also of Emily Finnis Lake, his youngest child by Mary-Anne his wife who died 8 August 1845 aged 9 months. Also of Mary Anne wife of the above Edward Lake who died 5 September 1861 aged 45

8. To the memory of Elizabeth LAKE, daughter of John and Ann Lake who departed this life 4 October 18?? aged 19 years. Also Ann the second wife of J. Lake, daughter of T.DENNE Esq of Watmer Hall in this county, died 11 November 1813 aged 45 years

9. John LAKE of Radfield, 50 years churchwarden of this parish. Eldest son of John and Elizabeth Lake departed this life December 4 1844 aged 70 years. His third wife Mary daughter of the late Mr CHITTENDEN still survives. During the whole course of a long and active life he devoted a powerful intellect entirely to the service of the public and to the provision for his family leaving behind an unblemished character impressed with a deep sense of their loss. With feelings of sincere gratitude this tablet is erected by his family

10. In a vault underneath this chancel lieth the body of William LAKE Esq. eldest son of John and Anne Lake of Woodstreet in this parish who departed this life 2? November 1849 aged 58 years. Also Elizabeth wife of the above and daughter of John PREBBLE Esq. of Shorne in this county who departed this life April 24 1872 aged 78 years leaving issue three children Elizabeth Ann and William

11. Memorial high on wall of chancel opposite that to memorial of Edward LAKE. William Lake of Woodstreet in this parish yeoman. Second son of John and Elizabeth Lake departed this life September 14 1835 aged 67 years. He married Ann daughter of Christopher WILDASH of this parish and had fourteen children of whom 6 sons and 4 daughters survived him amply provided for by his judgement industry and prudence, Gratitude for his kindness and example , Respect for his character in all the relations of life and veneration for his memory prompt the erection of this tablet by his surviving widow and children

12. Small stone. Here lyeth the body of ?Thom the 4 son of Thom and Eliza LAKE. He died in March and was buried the 20 day aged 3 months ?1681

13. Other stones. M.L., J.L., 185, 1834, J.L., 1844

14. Stone now partly under altar in chancel. W.L. 1849

16. Large west window. John LAKE died 1844 . William Lake died 1835


In Bapchild churchyard.

17. Sacred to the memory of George LAKE formerly of Oakley Higham, eldest son of William and Ann Lake late of Woodstreet in this parish. He died February 20 1863 aged 72 and was buried in St Mary’s Church Higham

18. Sacred to the memory of John LAKE of No.10 Lincolns Inn London, Second son of William and Ann Lake late of Wood Street in this parish who departed this life after a lingering and painful illness on the 23 February 1853 aged 62 years
