Some Monumental Inscriptions of Ightham Church, noted by Leland L. Duncan June 1920. Typed up by Ted Connell, checked by Frank & Zena Bamping.

1. Thomas STAPLES died 29 January 1797 aged 66 years. Elizabeth wife of Thomas Staples died 25 November 1794 aged 63 years. Also three sons, Thomas died 3 September 1767 age 3 years. Richard 10 February 1794 age 19 years. John 17 October 1796 aged 28 years. Also Sarah wife of John BARO(?)TON late of Tonbridge daughter of above died 27 June 1818 aged 46 years.

2. Thomas MARTIN of this Parish died 17 August 1785 aged 59 years.

3. William Brown of this parish died 22 January 1815 aged 38 years.

4. Small cross: Elizabeth DIPROSE died 3 December 1861 aged 74 years.

5. Coped cross: Caroline GREGORY relict of N. Gregory Captain R.N. died 15 August 1861 aged 87 years.

6. Tomb with coped top with shield, a lion passant holding in his right paw a cross staff. On a chief nebulee a cross (pattee). Inscription: Here is deposited Captain James Iverson BAILEY of Chesterfield House, Tonbridge (sic) Wells in this County who died 21 March 1869 aged 85 years. Also Anne his wife who died 12 May 1866 aged 63 years R.I.P. In peace in Christ here is deposited Lavinia, wife of the Rev. James Sandford BAILEY M.A. of Ightham Place and daughter of Demetrius GREVISJAMES Esq. J.P. of Ightham Court. She died 10 February 1875. below are six shields. 1. As on coped top. 2. As on coped top with shield of pretence. Quarterly per fess invected counterchanged ermine and . 3. As shield of pretence. 4 Quarterly 1 & 4 as shield on coped top. 2 & 3 as shield of pretence. 5.

7. Selenar Wooldridge RICHARDS born 4 August 1831, died 4 Januay 1877. Erected by her mother. Also William Cornelius Richards son of above born 1 January 1877 died 2 January 1877. Also Elizabeth ASHBY died 17 July 1855. Also John Ashby died 6 October 1859.

East of Main Chancel.
8.. Elizabeth, wife of George WRIGHT of this Parish died 16 January 1834 aged 59 years. Above George Wright died 11 June 1854 aged 83 years. Elizabeth, his second wife, died 5 January 1878 aged 80 years.

9. Mary, wife of Thomas HILLS of West Malling died 27 May 1826 aged 27 years. Thomas son of above born 1 May 1826 died 19 December 1826.

10. Samuel BATES of this Parish died 7 June 1828 aged 76 years. Left issue one daughter, Sarah. Also Elizabeth, wife of above Samuel Bates died 5 January 1836 aged 81 years.

11. George WRIGHT died 2 May 1873 aged 73 years. Susannah his wife died 21 April 1855 aged 61 years.

12. Altar Tomb: Top William WRIGHT of this Parish died 18 January 1811 aged 77 years. Sarah, his wife died 1 March 1802 aged 68 years. William son of above died 14 September 1804 aged 48 years. Dinah, daughter of above William and Sarah Wright and wife of Richard COPPER of this Parish died 5 December 1804 aged 41 years. Also above Richard Copper died 8 September 1807 aged 52 years. North Side: Also William Copper died 8 April 1807 aged 25 years. Also Richard Copper died 8 April 1807 aged ?26 years. Also John Copper died ????aged ??? (son) (Parish Register: John Copper buried 27 July 1811 F&Z.B) East End: Harriot Susannah CRITTLE died 22 June 1842 17 years 7 months.
West end: Jane Elizabeth, wife of William Wright died _ _ _ 2 aged _ _ (?son)

13. Mary, daughter of William and Sarah WRIGHT of this Parish. She died 4 April 17(?8)7 aged (?18) years.

14. Harriett wife of Charles HENDERSON died 14 May 1862 aged 61 years. Charles Fallows Henderson died 8 October 1889 in 80th year. Caroline Grice OUTRIDGE daughter of above died 27 August 1874 aged 41 years.

15. Mr John REED cloth drawer of St Clements Dean [Dane], London. He died 24 August 1733 aged 45 years. Mrs Anne, wife of Mr John Reed cloth drawer of St Clements Deanes, London, daughter of Thomas and Ann TOMOSON of this Parish died 21 (or7) April 1728 in her 38th year. (Parish Register: buried 24 April F&Z.B)

16. Ann wife of Thomas CHAPMAN died 29 May 1867 age 79 years. Also Thomas Chapman died 2 August 1883 age 92 years. He served in the 7th Regiment of Royal Fusiliers under the Great Duke of Wellington at Albuera, when he was wounded, and at Salamanca, Vittoria, and the Pyrrenes also in America.

17. John BERRY died ?15 April 1798 aged 56 years. (Parish Register: John son of John and Mary Berry buried 20 April aged 16 years. F&Z.B)

He lamented the death of his father and dyed soon after him on 7 January 1735 in his 15th year and was buried in the same grave with his father. North side: Also the body of Urbane Hodsoll who died 8 September 1745 aged 22 years. (four lines of verse) West side: To whose happy memories the right sorrow fall. idow and mother erected this tomb. 130. Elizabeth wife of Charles AUSTEN died 23 August 1807 aged 35 years. Charles Rogers Austen died 10 April 1860 aged 90 years. Also Elizabeth their daughter died 1 July 1801 aged 5 years. Left issue 2 sons and 1 daughter, Ann, William and Charles. Also Jane their daughter died 4 January 1815 aged 17 months.

131. Mr Thomas ROBERTS died 16 December 1835 aged 58 years.

132. James TAYLOR of this Parish died 21 June 1832 aged 60 years. Mary Taylor his wife died 7 April 1858 aged 84 years. William Taylor son of above died 15 November 1833 aged 29 years. Mary Ann Taylor daughter of above died 2 December 1835 aged 36.

133. Opposite Church Tower: Mr James TAYLOR of this Parish died 26 July 1845 aged 49 years. Elizabeth his wife died 1 September 1870 aged 78 years.

134. Constantine SELBY 4th son of William Coleman and Arabella Selby died 2 May 1874 aged 32 years. Arabella Selby mother of above died 11 August 1876 aged 74 years.

The remaining stones are in the newer part – mostly 1890 onwards, a few earlier stones: seemed to have been moved c 1868.

135. John Thomas ISMAY of this Parish died 15 October 1869 aged 25 years. Mary wife of George Ismay died 9 March 1879 aged 76 years. Above George Ismay died 19 December 1889 aged 85 years.

136. John SUMMERS died 2 May 1878 aged 76 years. Anne his wife died 6 July 1869 aged 65 years.

137.John son of John and Anne SUMMERS died 2 July 1870 aged 43 years.

138. George SUMMERS late of Wickhurst Farm Leigh, Kent 2nd son of Richard and Mary Summers of this Parish died 19 November 1869 aged 75 years. Left issue 3 daughters and 1 son, Mary Ann, Elizabeth, Sarah and George. Sarah daughter of above and wife of Joseph STEEL of Denbigh St Pimlico, London died 20 November 1871 aged 42 years.

139. Thomas MORRIS died 23 December 1868 aged 84 years.

140. In the Porch are several memoranda on the history of the Church, amongst them copy of a letter from Sir John SEDLEY of St Clere to Sir Edward DERING in the Surrenden Collection. 24th March 1639 speaks of "John BULBANKE hath as he tells me almost done his church works in Iteham (sic) and took advantage of this holy day to wayte upon you to learne your pleasure though I am afraid he hath worked so longe in Iteham Church that he hath almost gotten himself a place in the churchyarde being I doubt fallen into a deep consumption." (? the North Aisle)
